Perhaps the fella in the Sunday Times will be along with a cheque?
Mr Leen said taking over McIlvanney’s work was a ‘homage’. Taking him at face value, ok. But why did he then rewrite the piece for the Examiner website? If it was a ‘homage’ it was still a ‘homage’. Why the change? All a bit like Mr Leen sending a mass card and then looking for it back. And v disrespectful to the O Se family. Steven King was sacked for essentially the same offence.
Mr Leen should be made to apologise, and make a substantial donation to a charity of Mr McIlvanney’s choice.

Editor of the Limerick Leader, Alan English, is unhappy with the apology offered by Tony Leen, and also makes reference to the ‘Steven King affair’.

Interesting. Was surprised there wasn’t more criticism to be honest once it became public knowledge. Not sure if it’s just mates not wanting to upset mates or if people are afraid of throwing stones lest they be questioned themselves in time but I doubt he’d have such an easy ride if he wrote for a national newspaper in the UK or US for example.
This Alan English fella is obviously no mate of Tony Leen, going by his Twitter rant, but surprising alright that one of the national newspapers hasn’t availed of the opportunity to embarrass one of its competitors.
Leen contacted me at the time asking for the post to be removed. This was before the ST article I think. He offered a similar explanation that it was an homage and he forgot to explain that in the article. He also offered a private apology (which I thought was odd but he assumed he knew us personally).
