Contenders for the greatest song of all time

Sorry bud. I constantly rotate my top 5 but this is an ever present

Top top tune. Heard it in the boozer yesterday, was whistling away thinking what a crackin tune and some powerhouse of a vocal. Cant think of too many singers that can beat this

As Mick O Dwyer said about John Egan, “Im not saying he was the greatest inside forward of all time, but I haven’t seen any better”

I’ve watched all the documentaries about how the song was made and also the vocal without the backing track. All magic

There’s a chick that stones used to get to sing it live in the 80s/90s and she gave it a good rattle but nothing like the original

A “chick”.

Sittin’ on the dock of the Bay - Otis Redding

Unpopular opinion: Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay by Otis Redding is a grand song, a nice song, a pleasing song to listen to and I’ve just listened to it now and enjoyed it for what it is, but it’s vastly over rated and not within a wet winter of being the best song ever.

I think it’s vastly over rated because Otis Redding died in a plane crash and people are naturally drawn to tragic stories and building up the bodies of work of the dead as greater than they are.

I sometimes mentally confuse Otis Redding with West Indian cricketer Otis Gibson who played for Glamorgan in inter-county cricket competitions like the NatWest trophy and the Benson and Hedges Cup circa 1994. Otis Gibson loved a big one for six.

Glamorgan also had a Tony Cottey playing for them at the time, who I mentally confused with Tony Cottee, who played for West Ham, Everton and other clubs.

This is a genuine contender. It’s not the first time I’ve posted it on this forum. Late poster @Thrawneen wrote something about it many years ago which convinced me of its utter greatness, I already knew it was great but he convinced me it wasn’t a “guilty pleasure”.

This song came out about mid-late January 1989, I think. Which was about the time Liverpool were beating Millwall 0-2 in an FA Cup Sunday live game at The Den, Joe Montana was doing “The Drive”, I watched England drawing 0-0 away to Greece in a lunchtime friendly match on a Wednesday afternoon on a day I was out sick from school, and I was about six weeks away from the happenings in the quoted post below, which I still think about most days.

She’s a Liverpool fan, but she wasn’t when she sat beside me, when all I did was talk about Liverpool.

It obviously evokes some happy memories for you Sid and thats fair enough. But that’s a terrible fucking song.

It’s an absolute masterpiece.

I was sitting in the psychiatric ward of UCHG around about December 31st, 2022, eating crackers during the late afternoon snack session. There were about four people in the canteen, it was grey and dull as hell, and the people all had vacant looks on their faces.

And this song was playing on the radio.

Not even that can turn me against it.
