Contenders for the greatest song of all time

Cultural taste is subjective but some fella saying that the criteria for the greatest song of all time is that it can be banged out at 5am at the residents bar after a wedding is up there with the stupidest takes I’ve ever seen on this site. And that’s saying something.

Crucifixion?
Yes.

Good - Out the door, line on the left, one cross each.

These two seem to go with that in any ‘standard’ list of these things.

Absolutely.

You can’t have this discussion without either.

I always thought that Cave’s version was pretty shit.

Use your own mind rather than referring to “standard lists”.

God Only Knows, God help us more like.

Waterloo Sunset is a great song though I don’t think it’s The Kinks’ best song.

I don’t think anyone could accuse me of following standard lists particularly when it comes to music.

Cultural taste is subjective but some fellas saying that the greatest song of all time doesn’t need to have a singable chorus is up there with the stupidest takes I’ve seen on this forum or anywhere else, and that’s saying something.

It’s a bit like saying that the best joke of all time doesn’t need to have a punchline.

I could never see the attraction of The Beach Boys. They dripped saccharineness, it was almost like they were making music for advertising for middle America.

There are far greater representations through song of the 1960s West Coast idea than anything the Beach Boys did.

I think this is known as “doubling down”.

Scott McKenzie - San Francisco

The Byrds - Turn! Turn! Turn!

The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin’

Marlena Shaw - California Soul

Claiming the best song of all time doesn’t need a tune is a bit like saying the best hurling team of all time doesn’t need to have won an All-Ireland. A bit like Waterford in the 2000s.

You’re taking this very badly. You should stop sulking and lighten up.
