No CR7?

Robben and Baggio bottled it in the World Cup Final FFS

He’s been better than Messi at the big tournaments for sure but like Messi and for a player of his stature and standing, he’s not done enough.

Every single player there bottled it far more than not in fairness - including Cristiano and Messi

Trezeguet would have to be up there

Do you place no store in the champions league as a tournament ?

Not since Italian teams stopped winning it 11 years ago.

Bullshit.

Most of those players dominated tournaments with lesser teams than Messi or CR7 - who are meant to be the best in the world but have yet to dominate a major international tournament.

The Argentina teams Messi has played on have only done well when they have gritted it out with 0-0s and 1-0s with teams packed with quality.

Ronaldo tbf was on a declining Portugal team for most of his career with pluggers. It’s only in the last 3/4 years where Portugal have found another golden generation come about rather than the likes of Nani, Quaresma, Hugo Portillo and Simao.

Sir Geoff Hurst must be the greatest player of all time if you’re to go by the logic used by one poster here. Nobody else has scored a hat trick in a World Cup final. Doesn’t get greater than that.

Hagi dominated a tournament did he?

Had a superb 94 WC.

At least 7 of that list above never dominated a tournament. At least not much more than Messi did when winning player of the tournament and having a fairly under par final or Ronaldo did in 2016

Gary Breen has to be up there. Was fighting off interest from Barcelona and Inter after 2002.

All of them have performed better in major international tournaments than Messi has.

A guy who breaks all sorts of goalscoring records at club level but can’t score a goal at a major tournament against a big team.

A team of Gary Breens would been the greatest the world had ever seen.

totti scored a penalty against Australia in the knockout stages of 2006

What’s your point?

He was MOTM in the Euro 2000 final and should have got POTT award.

It’d be interesting if someone could dissect the top tens big game performance at tournaments or champions leagues… Won’t be me though
