Austin Gleeson should go back there IMO. The role is designed to get the sweeper on the ball a lot and who would you want on the ball more than him from a Waterford perspective. Obviously takes away from them at the other end but sure they’ve no interest in scoring anyway

I think he’s been in and out of games in his current role and a defined role might suit him better

They will need an experienced level headed player — Stick the Brick back there to catch ball all day and bat it away one handed for one of his fellow defenders to langer up the field.

Too much of a free spirit and unreliable (albeit brilliant) to play in such a clearly defined role where he’s required to be the pivot for the entire team.

I’m struggling to figure out who would be the best replacement for the De Burca role (if it comes to him missing the game). There’s been a tendency in some quarters to downplay it and say “sure anyone could excel with nobody to mark” but De Burca is unreal and prevents untold with his positional sense, aerial ability, mobility and general awareness and screening. The protection he offers Coughlan is immense - Tyrrell touched on their relationship / understanding in his column last Friday. He’s had the very rare bad game (e.g. 2016 Munster Final) but De Burca is exceptional and I don’t think anyone can easily slot in there and retain the smooth relationships with the other defenders around the sweeper position.

As I said last week, I think De Burca’s loss is incalculable. It’s not just plugging the sweeper gap in his absence - he’s a brilliant player in his own right and it impacts the relations between sweeper and full back, sweeper and corners backs, sweeper and half back line. All these relationships are almost telepathic from training and playing in the system for a few years but now he’s gone and someone else won’t have the same understanding of the role and his team-mates! I’d be very surprised if Cork don’t win now.

@Fagan_ODowd, what are Waterford likely to do? Mentions here and elsewhere on line of Darragh Fives playing sweeper but he’s been playing very well in midfield. John Gardiner suggested Fives for the role with a couple of other players dropping back a line too and Maurice Shanahan starting. I think Waterford would want to use him as an impact sub again all things being equal. You lack some out and out defensive cover in the squad.

We are going to go 15 on 15 rough the soft cunts up and then batter them.

Very good article by PM O’Sullivan in today’s Examiner. Did you read it, @Malarkey? I’m sure a load of roasters saw the use of “fiats” and thought he meant “feats”. Great stuff. About to read Jackie Tyrrell’s piece now. It’s become a little tradition of mine to do 60-90 minutes work on Friday mornings, make sure everything is under control, grab a coffee and then take 10 minutes to read Jackie’s and PM’s Friday articles.
