i remember my grandmother used to have that on , used it be a Sunday night around May and RTE Radio Cork would have it live on AM radio
i was on to the father this morning about Ethon Varian, he knows the lot of them from his refereeing days and you’re right all southside , shur Greenmount Rangers would be their team.

Temple Utd. are they gone?, the first i ever saw them i was around 9 and Wanderers were playing them in the Tech field in Cobh, ah it was the Junior team now, father was playing- i was behind the goal talking to their keeper and i remember him drinking “water” out of a glass bottle, i was holding the bottle for him behind the goal, at half time my dad came over and told me to stay away from him.
anyway
later on we played temple , jesus I dunno how it even happened as they’d have been at a shite level and we were MSL premier… they had an oddball lad called Varian up front and he tore us asunder… i remembered the name as it was so odd… i never heard it again outside Cork soccer

Varian would be a surname that would cause people to shudder when they hear it tbh. A lot of bad eggs. The young lad was some hurler. Captained Cork sides from U14 up till the time he left. Was head and shoulders above his age group athletically.

Temple are still knocking around the AUL
During the late 80s they’d have been one of the top junior teams in the country and would have been too 3 in the MSL Senior.
They had Austin Ricken who would have been one of the best junior players in the country but his family were/are steeped in the club so he stayed out. Denis Keane was a great player.
There’s lots of Varians around Cork, i played soccer with one of them, brilliant player.

That was a great watch. There’s a delightful campness to the Cork character.

Yeah think Temple are gone ( loopers anyway, them Rockmount, St Mary’s, Mayfield and basically most of the norrie teams

Ye had fuck all when it mattered , after the treaty, and the border campaign, and 69- now

When did Rockmount abandon the city? Can they still be classed as norries or cluchies at this stage?

ye had one proper rebel and ye shot him

There’s nobody from Whitechurch playing with Rockmount, nobody from Kilkullly playing with St Mary’s, Flat green fields are at a premium in the northside but those clubs are all rooted there

There is a few hills up there. St Mary’s have a fine set up. I went upto a car boot sale one day pre pandemic.

christ St.Mary’s… mother of jesus…that was always a ropey gane

Is Denis Roy’s brother? Johnson Keane played with Temple as a striker.

Yes, Denis is a brother, I saw him play a few times, I lived very near the old AUL pitches in Mahon, Temple were a fantastic side,
Don’t think I ever saw Johnson play
