Corner-Boys, A Dying Breed

I’m loosely based (temporarily I hope) in a town in the South-East and have seen an outstanding example of this species over the last few days.
In my younger days, Mohill town was the Corner-Boy capital of the western world, as Becks, Bells, Packy Foley and Michéal Shortt battled for position around Paschal McKeon’s corner (to correct @massey ferguson who calls it Gordon’s corner).

I’m on this lad’s case for 3/4 days as he hovers from A-B depending on sunlight. There was a funeral close by today that I attended and I parked just above his perch.
I got out and walked back pretending to be a bitéén lost and looking up in the sky - he was on me like a flash…

You’re new here he says, are you in trouble?
No, No says I, how did you know that - I’m looking for the Church.
Leitrim plates he says, not many a’ them about, but yer’ around a while, I seen that car last week.
Good says I, but I’m just attending the funeral.
You a TD or Senator, naming the local TD (He was here at the removal yesterday, late but here)…

A fine strong lad of about 45, I’ll ramble around over the next few days and garner more, but he’s on the ball so far…:clap:

I was a corner boy myself many years ago. Hanging about at the corner of Green Street and Barrack St, with fellow corner boys, Smiley Houlihan, Stokey Walsh, Djucks Grace, Tennis Ball Falconer, Spud Murphy, Banjo Tobin and Three Dog Keating, smoking the butts of singles that were procured in Seanie Browns shop beside the Military Barracks.

are corner boys the same things as rent boys?

Is Spud Murphy Slab’s father or uncle?

TFK cornerboys…

@Sidney
@Thrawneen

any others?

More like

Father. Met the mother at the weekend after years. Lovely lady.

What them corner boys need is a good war, that will sort em. There were very few corner boys in 1916-18… All took the shilling.

What was your nickname?

Where I’m living in London the current corner boys are Polaks that stand on the corner drinking cans for the evening and night and throw all their empties into nearby gardens and driveways

He was called Fagan, i.e. the king of the corner boys.

Guggles

I have no idea why they called me Guggles

Sent in another job application today. They try to catch you out with an application form with several formatting issues*. I solved all issues with it, some of which were a little tricky.
I’ll do you proud yet.

*At least I’m assuming the issues were put there on purpose…but it is for a civil service job so, possibly not.

Best of luck kid. Will walking away from a cs job last year go against you do you think?

I think I have enough good reasons lined up to convince them to give me a try and my old Big Boss will give me a glowing ref. He told me yesterday on the blower.
I was a public servant anyway and didn’t have the ability to transfer around so I think all the reasoning will be sound and they’ll see the logic. I hope.
