Coronavirus - Close the Airports

Panicked because I asked if my Mrs should close her business some 14 weeks back when we were all very ignorant about things? … we now have the facts and there’s no excuse for hiding under the bed…

I think those of us who are cautious do not want to see a second wave come and destroy fragile businesses who have invested a lot into reopening their businesses and will not survive a second wave.

The 26 has a basket case health system which is so vulnerable to increase in cases.

Right now things have improved and it’s about limiting the chance of this virus rearing its head to the levels it did the last time. With the cases maintained at this level, we can move on and get things on the right track. By opening up airports and travel, cases are going to jump hugely again and we severely risk going back to where we were at in April and May.

Those adamant about unrestricted travel are very sad to be using these proxies to justify their sense of entitlement for holidays.

It’s time for the government to grow a pair of balls and severely restrict international travel for the remainder of 2020. Like the Cheltenham crew, those who travel abroad for the remainder of the year are traitors to Ireland and traitors to the planet.

Here kid. I fancy a roll for my lunch. Beef or pulled pork? Or maybe one of each. What ya reckon?

What would be wrong with travel to a country with a similar, or better transmission rate than us? Even if there is a risk, you could argue that tourism is the biggest industry on earth. It’ll die if it’s not helped.

I’m not in favour of unrestricted travel, unrestricted mass gatherings etc, but there is a world of difference between that and limited travel between well performaning countries

You park up at the airport.

You get a shuttle bus in from the car park, you’re in with about 30 or 40 people for 15 minutes or more. You then enter the airport where there are thousands of people who you are queuing up with you for the same services. You then board the plane where you are sitting with 200-300 people for anything from an hour to 8 hours in a confined space. You then repeat the cycle when you get off the plane.

So it puts you in contact with thousands of people you would not have been in contact with in normal circumstances and that’s why airports and air travel represent the single biggest risk to the virus ramping up again. To dispute the consequences of that takes a special type of idiot.

We should be trying to reduce the number of people we are in contact with and mingle with until such time. Every country should be concentrating on their own containtment.

It’s easy to look up the statistics for yourself if you would like to inform yourself. Most European countries have fewer cases per capita than Ireland.

What you should be looking at is the present, retrospect has nothing to do with it and right now the numbers are very low in Ireland mainly thanks to a 3 month lockdown where people’s social interactions were heavily curtailed.

What you want is for airports to open and people to be exposed to thousands of other people which is unavoidable in an airport setting. We still need to be very careful and very vigilant in the number of people we interact with and need to take measurements to minimise this.

What you are proposing is just so reckless after all everyone has gone through in the past 3 months. It’s time for the government to grow a set of balls and tell the aviation companies to pipe down and suck it up.

Get in on the ground floor lads.

Concern for your Mrs health and business is not panicking. Asking lads on the internet for advice on it, is. Stockpiling medicine and groceries that prevents others from getting acess is typical of an ‘I’m alright Jack’ type, a label you are throwing around quite regularly. You need to calm. This will pass eventually.

You’re a little dim aren’t you? Don’t believe the hype…

Clearly you don’t want to inform yourself. Ok. As long as you admit that your view in uninformed.

Surely mandating it requires laws and until this week that wasn’t possible without Seanad etc

Also, the question of enforcement is interesting too. Your man from the NBRU was on the radio yesterday saying masks should be made mandatory on trains and buses but not to expect drivers or train workers to police it :man_shrugging:

No doubt the master of whataboutery will be on soon about a bigger crowd at some funeral in the ‘26’ in his condescending tone.

You’re the one who is ignoring the patently obvious risks associated with international travel in a pandemic and the impact if will have on bringing back a virus that has been well and truly suppressed at present.

Ah OK. I’m afraid to go in there

I started wearing a mask to shops a Few weeks ago. Lots of people wearing them now. More people who wear them more people will wear them. Lots of places taking temperature on way into places. Hand sanitiser in most places now, Trollies being cleaned, people respecting distances in queues.

The Micks need to grow up and take a bit of personal responsibility and wear a mask without a cop standing over you. Lads who won’t wear a mask complaining it’s not mandatory to wear a mask - you couldn’t make it up.
