Coronavirus - Dig In, It's going to be a while yet

It’s funny how lads are quick to dismiss the Chinese numbers but are happy to buy ppe off them and take their advice that we should go into lock down indefinitely. I Wonder if the western world went into lock down for three months who’s economy would benefit the most ?

Who’s the lad having his moment at this Government briefing?
He thinks he is rallying the troops for war or a junior county final.

The real number which I presume is impossible to quantify is how many would have died in Italy if they had enough icu beds. Their death rate is largely irrelevant when discussing the virus as their health system collapsed. For countries who’s health system can handle the surge it’ll be no where near as bad.

That’s the total number of people who’ve been admitted to icu. It doesn’t include deaths or people who have recovered I believe.

That is whole point everything we are trying to do.

 for our souls I can’t even travel back to the the motherland:joy:

Yes but fellas are using that to come up with a death rate. A number of Those people are dying because the health system collapsed not because of the virus. People seem to have completely forgotten this. In countries where the health system is handing the surge the death rate is absolutely tiny.

How hard is it to get more icu beds? I saw somewhere we were hoping to have 400 by 2030? How much would these cost?

Oooffffttt

It’s not the beds, as much as the staff to man them.
As far as I know a person in ICU gets a dedicated nurse round the clock.
So 400 beds would be , 800 nurses.

I’m predicting this will be like the president’s speech in Independence Day

How many nurses are freed up by say no elective surgeries taking place? I mean keep the pubs closed and allow people to go back to work in two weeks time. Basically go back to where we were two weeks ago and try and increase icu capacity while focusing on the nursing homes. If we stay in full lock down things could get much worse.

Spanish health authorities say the total number of reported COVID-19 deaths in the country has risen by 950 to 10,003 and the total number of reported cases has risen by 8,102 to 110,238

Could you send this question out to your Twitter mates to see if they can garner an answer?

“The total number of people who have been admitted to ICUs” seems on any reasonable reading to mean “all COVID-19 infected people who have been admitted to ICUs since the start of this outbreak, whether currently there, recovered and no longer there, or dead.”

According to Richard Chambers, Ronan Glynn said that the 136 figure is not the amount of people currently in ICUs, but that the amount of people currently in ICUs was close to that figure.

So what makes up the difference? The recovered people who have left ICUs?

There is a real lack of clarity in how these statistics are presented and the phrasing around such. It leaves things open to interpretation. Leaving things open to interpretation is not advisable.

Why not just categorise it as:
i) the amount of people currently in ICUs
ii) the amount of people who were in ICUs but have left them alive
iii) the dead
iv) where the dead died etc.

That would give clarity. Whereas what we are being presented with is opaque.
