Coronavirus - Here come the variants

Iā€™d say the DoH press secretary headā€™s wrecked with Donnelly and his advisors.

Itā€™s his/her/itā€™s legal duty.

It would be an odd approach to take (no action), and I assume thatā€™s why nobody sensible would suggest it. The difference of opinion is what measures are appropriate, how effective are the measures, and how should the measures evolve over time.

To the numbers. The two worst months of the pandemic by far were April 2020 and January 2021. Ireland had 50% excess deaths in April 2020, and 28% excess deaths in January 2021. Sweden had 38% excess deaths in April 2020 and 25% excess deaths in January 2021.

Would those statistics not raise questions in your mind as to how effective Irelandā€™s measures were compared to a country that took a different approach? Or at the very least suggest Sweden did not just ā€œlet it ripā€ as the loon you are responding to suggests?

If somebody went on rte and said all restrictions should be lifted tomorrow. Rte would never have them back on and probably look for the individual to be removed from their job.

Mcconkey is on rte saying weā€™ll have restrictions for 3-5 years and nobody says anything.

Looks like it could be October/November before weā€™re vaccinated now. Weā€™ll have a 2 week window to do some Christmas shopping then back into a form of lockdown.

Itā€™s for your own good.

Agreed.

We had our worst spikes of deaths approximately one month after having no restrictions or easing restrictions greatly. There may of course be no causal connection

So did every other western country, regardless of what level of restrictions were in place. January is the worst month for respiratory diseases and deaths. I do agree the encouragement in late November of a ā€œmeaningful Christmasā€ was self defeating, especially allowing places of worship, cinemas, etc. to reopen. It was known for many months at that stage that the disease was airborne and mainly spread indoors, so encouraging people to congregate indoors was very foolhardy.

There is no question people let their guard down over the holidays and this contributed to the spike in January. But it happened everywhere, regardless of what governments were doing or not doing in terms of restrictions.

UK looks to be in serious bother with the Saff variant now. Popping up all over the place. Youā€™d imagine this is going to potentially cause serious mutation possibily with people who are half-vaccinated with the AZ vaccine. At this stage I think itā€™s fair to say we are well and truly fucked for a few years yet.

Great positivity.

The much malingned Samuel McConkey. The stone that was rejected has become the corner stone.

TBF Israel are doing ok.

225 cases two days ago, 176 cases yesterday. Everything well opened up. Itā€™s just time to get on with things and live with whatever risk is there.

What the story in Israel with quarantine?

But we know for an absolute 100% fact that this is absolutely not an option with the people steering the ship.
