TV3 aims to lift the lid on Ireland’s sexual revolution with an explosive new six-part documentary.
Produced by Red Pepper Productions the provocative documentary, How the Irish Have Sex, will hit the small screen next Tuesday at 9pm.
The documentary series will “tackle, explore and deal” with sexuality through the decades, from the 60s right up to today’s economically, socially and culturally developed society.
The Herald tracked down one of the participants in the controversial new series who claims viewers will be left stunned by some of the revelations uncovered in the documentary.
According to the contributor: "People will truly be shocked by some of the topics.
"I think it’s definitely going to cause a bit of controversy because it goes into everything from losing your virginity to exploring heterosexuality, bisexuality and homosexuality.
“I had absolutely no doubts about taking part because I think it’s about time Irish people have the chance to talk openly about sex,” they added.
Those who took part in the documentary series range in age from 21 to 78 and are from every walk of life.
Among those who will discuss their attitude to sexuality are those who remained virgins until marriage, those who like to play the field, a gay man who has lived a decade since being diagnosed with HIV and even Ireland’s leading fetish photographer, Hector Heatherwood, will make an appearance.
Erotic
Also on the bill is mum of two, Amanda Norton who works as an erotic dancer and makes no excuses for her chosen career.
Meanwhile, gay icon Enda McGrattan who has a regular slot in Dublin’s premier gay venue, The George, will also dish the dirt on what led him to become a drag queen.
Better known by his alter ego of Veda, Enda will reveal how he was bullied as a teen and now feels vindicated as he struts his stuff on stage.
According to a producer on the show: “His views on sexuality and casual sex are, at best, unusual.”
TV3’s commissioning editor, Fintan Maguire says: "In How the Irish Have Sex, Red Pepper Productions aims to explore the greatest testament of history by featuring real life Irish stories from real life Irish people; essential and central to the structure and content of the programme.
"The series could be considered a vox pop on sex in a historical and social context.
“The voices will range from young couples who have come of age in a sexually lenient country to those, now middle-aged, who lived through the momentous road to liberation, while others will tell of an Ireland, steeped in sexual taboos and strict moral imperatives.”
