Cracking songs, cracking lyrics

What better way to revive this thread than with 2 Smiths masterpieces? Anyone go to see Morrissey last night? It doesn’t get any better than these two.

How Soon is Now

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

I am the son
And the heir
Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar
I am the son and heir
Oh, of nothing in particular

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

There’s a club, if you’d like to go
You could meet somebody who really loves you
So you go, and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home, and you cry
And you want to die

When you say it’s gonna happen “now”
Well, when exactly do you mean ?
See I’ve already waited too long
And all my hope is gone

You shut your mouth
How can you say
I go about things the wrong way ?
I am Human and I need to be loved
Just like everybody else does

Panic:

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again ?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the Grasmere
But Honey Pie, you’re not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there’s Panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself

Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play

On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
Provincial towns you jog 'round
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ

“Hang the DJ” the greatest line ever when youre out and there’s a shit dj who wont play anything decent.

Here’s a gem of a song from Pete Doherty with the Libertines

Time for Heroes

Did you see the stylish kids in the riot
We were shovelled up like muck
Set the night on fire
Wombles bleed truncheons and shields
You know I cherish you my love

But there’s a rumour spread nasty disease around town
Caught round the houses with your trousers down
A headrush in the bush
You know I cherish you my love
Oh how i cherish you my love

Tell me what can you want now you’ve got it all
The whole scene is obscene
Time will strip it away
A year and a day
And Bill Bones
Bill Bones knows what I mean
He knows it’s eating, it’s chewing me up
It’s not right for young lungs to be coughing up blood
Oh it’s all
It’s all in my hands
And its all up the walls

Well the stale chips are up and the hopes stakes are down
Its these ignorant faces that bring this town down
Yeah I sighed and sunken with pride
I passed myself down on my knees
Yes I passed myself down on my knees

Now tell me what can you want now you’ve got it all
The whole scene is obscene
Time will strip it away
A year and a day
And Bill Bones
Bill Bones knows what I mean
There are fewer more distressing sights than that
Of an Englishman in a baseball cap
Yeah we’ll die in the class we were born
That’s a class of our own my love
A class of our own my love

Did you see the stylish kids in the riot
We were shovelled up like muck
Then set the night on fire
Wombles bleed truncheons and shields
You know I cherish you my love
Oh how I cherish you my love.

And a Tom Waits classic

Kentucky Avenue

eddie graces buick got 4 bullet holes in the side
charlie delisle sittin at the top of an avocado tree
mrs stormll stab you with a steak knife if you step on her lawn i got a half pack of lucky strikes man come along with me lets fill our pockets with macadamia nuts then go over to bobby goodmansons and jump off the roof hilda plays strip poker and her mamas across the street joey navinski says she put her tongue in his mouth dicky faulkners got a switchblade and some gooseneck risers that eucalyptus is a hunchback theres a wind up from the south let me tie you up with kite string and i’ll show you the scabs on my knee watch out for the broken glass, put your shoes and socks on and come along with me lets follow that fire track
i think your house is burnin down
the go down to the hobo jungle
and kill some rattle snakes with a trowel
we’ll break all the windows in the old anderson place
and steal a bunch of boysenberrys
and smear em on our face
i’ll get a dollar from my mamas purse
and buy that skull and crossbones ring
and you can wear it around your neck
on an old piece of string

then we’ll spit on ronnie arnold
and flip him the bird
and slash the tires on the school bus
now don’t say a word
i’ll take a rusty nail
and scratch your initials on my arm
and i’ll show you how to sneak up
on the roof of the drugstore

take the spokes from your wheelchair
and a magpies wings
and tie em to your shoulders and your feet
i’ll steal a hacksaw from my dad
and cut the braces off your legs
and we’ll bury them tonight in the cornfield

put a church keey in your pocket
we’ll hop that freight train in the hall
and we’ll slide all the way down the drain
to new orleans in the fall

Pete Doherty is a jackass. His mother whores for Sinn Fein 8)

Pete Doherty may well be a jackass due to his drug habit and its more likely he would be the one whoring for Sinn Fein rather than his mother

“There is light that never goes out”

I was at a meeting today and this guy was asking me questions; i just kept repeating the above louder and louder

Fantastic song, but I don’t know if you’ve quite captured the spirit of it.
You might as well have recited the fooking alphabet at him.

And if you were actually referring to the line repeated again and again at the end of the song it should of course have been “There is a light and it never goes out”

Best lines though are the ones quoted in Trainspotting (the book, not the film):
“And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh god, my chance has come at last
(but then a strange fear gripped me and i
just couldnt ask).”

Check out “The Songs That Saved Your Life” by Simon Goddard. A must read for all fans of The Smiths.

Immense!

That Two Gallants albums is amazing. Favourites are the epics, Some Slender Rest and Threnody, both nearly 10 minutes long:

SOME SLENDER REST: MAMA GO MAKE MY BED. TUCK IN THE ABSURD. THESE CONFESSIONS ARE MINE BUT I?LL CLAIM NOT A WORD. IT?S A RESTLESS PARADE THAT PASSES ME BY, AND THROUGH THE CRACKS IN MY PALM I?VE SEEN THEM ALL GONE: SOME SEQUENCE OF LIVES. SHE CALLS OUT ALONE WITH A PAIN IN HER VOICE. IT?S THE WOUND OF BETRAYAL, ITS THE WEAPON OF CHOICE THAT LEFT HER HEART ON DISPLAY: TWO TATTOOS OF SKIN, ONE OF ICE ONE OF TIN, FOR THE DAYS HAVE GONE BY. BUT I AIN?T ONE TO REMINISCE. CLOSE MY HEART AND CLENCH MY FIST. NOW THE DAYS SWIFTLY PASS WITH A CHESTFULL OF FEAR. HERE THE MINUTES ARE OURS BUT THE MOMENTS ARE YEARS. AND OLD ACQUAINTANCES PASS, IN TRIOS IN PAIRS. IF THEY STAY OR THEY GO, ONE STRUGGLES TO KNOW, ONE STRUGGLES TO CARE. BUT OUT BEYOND THE PENITENTIARY WALLS, THE WIND BLOWS HARD, THE HIGHWAY CALLS. AND IF YOU SHOULD PASS THE ST. JAMES HOTEL, PLEASE STOP IN ?CAUSE I KNEW YOU WELL. BUT THAT WAS OH SO LONG AGO. AND NO, I NEVER LEARNED HOW TO LET GO. BUT IF YOU FEAR YOUR OWN THOUGHTS AND YOU?RE SICK OF THIS LIFE. IF YOU?RE RECKLESS OF HAND AND TREMBLING A KNIFE, THOUGH YOUR DOORS PREFER LOCKS AND YOUR DEATH PREFERS SPOONS, COME STEP OUT YOUR GATE, ONE LAST LAUGH AT FATE, FOREVER IS TOO SOON. BUT IF I?M SICK OR IF I?M WELL, ACROSS THE FIELD THE DEATH BELL KNELLS, SO RUN AND TELL MY DARLING TRUE THAT MY DAYS ARE SHORT, MY BREATHS ARE FEW. SO PLEASE COME DOWN AND TAKE MY HAND, MY LAST DEMAND. AND LEAD ME TO SOME SLENDER REST, BUT PLEASE DISMISS WHAT I CONFESS.

THRENODY: GATHER ?ROUND YOU WOUNDED PEOPLE; SHADOWS FALL UPON THE STEEPLE. SOON SHALL COME THE CLOSING OF, THE CLOSING OF THE GATES. FOR THERE IS WORD OF PLAGUE AMONG US. CURSE THE ONE WHOSE POISON STUNG US. ALL ALONG THEY ALLEYWAYS THE SATYRS WAIT THEIR FATE. BUT WHO?S TO BLAME WHEN ALL ARE GUILTY; MORALS STAINED AND CONSCIENCE FILTHY, ABREAST YOUR IDOL REPLICAS, YOUR REPLICAS OF LUST. IN THE SKY I HEAR THE THRESHING. DARE TO WATCH YOUR LORD UNDRESSING. WHILE YOU BEG FORGIVENESS YOU FEED ON HIS DISGUST. BUT IF PERHAPS THE SALT MIGHT STAIN YOUR SKIN, AND IF PERHAPS THE SMOKE MIGHT WEEP YOUR EYES, LISTEN WHILE THE THRENODIES BEGIN. KNOW NO ONE IN HERE GETS OUT ALIVE. BUT LET YOUR FRAILTY NOT DECEIVE YOU; A LITTLE PINPRICK, REST RELIEVES YOU, AND DREAM OF ALL THE DAYS THAT ARE, THE YEARS THAT ARE TO COME. FOR YOU WILL DANCE AND YOU?LL BE NIMBLE_PIROUETTES UPON A THIMBLE_AND I WILL BE BESIDE YOU LEST I LOSE YOU ONCE AGAIN. BUT IF PERHAPS MY SORROWS ARE ALL SHOW AND I SHOULD FIND A CRACK AMONG THE GATES, GUILT SHALL FOLLOW ME WHERE EVER I GO. THOUGH I TRY I KNOW I CANT ESCAPE. AND WHEN YOU?RE GONE THE EARTH WILL CRUMBLE. I WILL TRY BUT I WILL STUMBLE AND ALL THROUGH THESE CITY STREETS MY ROBES SHALL DRAG THE GROUND. HEAR THE CHILDREN SWING WITH SORROW. YESTERDAY WAS ONCE TOMORROW. NO MORE I?LL BE TROUBLED BY THE TROUBLES OF THIS WORLD. BUT IF I LOSE MY STEP ALONG THE WAY, AND IF THE SPEECH OF VICTIM FILLS MY THROAT, OUT BEYOND THE CLIFFS THAT SHAPE THE DAY. IT?S THERE I?LL WANDER, THERE I?LL STRAY. IT?S THERE I?LL LOOK FOR YOU WHEN ALL MY TRIALS ARE DONE. I FEIGN TO SLEEP TO SAVE MY BREATH. THIS LOVE IS LOSS THIS LIFE IS THEFT, AND ALL THAT?S LEFT IS SOME VAIN NEED TO CARRY ON. AND THOUGH I FEAR THE TIGHTENING OF THE SKIES, AGAINST THE DAWN I?LL WATCH YOU RISE. OH LORD, THE COMPANY I KEEP WITHIN MY HEAD. THE SCENT OF FLESH MIGHT TEASE THE NOSE. IT CLAIMS THE CALM IT CLINGS THE CLOTHES. COULD THAT BE YOU MY LOVE, YOUR DUST UPON THE WIND?

As sung by Bertie this week to the PDs.

“Hurt”

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Good good

We had a similar thread to this before. Great calls starting off the thread with two quality Smiths numbers.

My favourite Smiths number is the incredible ‘I Know Its Over’

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it’s over - still I cling
I don’t know where else I can go
Oh …
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
See, the sea wants to take me
The knife wants to slit me
Do you think you can help me ?
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you)
And I know it’s over - still I cling
I don’t know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, la …
I know it’s over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said :
“If you’re so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you’re so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you’re so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you’re so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?
I know …
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That’s why you’re on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they’re in each other’s arms…”
It’s so easy to laugh
It’s so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over
It’s so easy to laugh
It’s so easy to hate
It takes guts to be gentle and kind
Over, over
Love is Natural and Real
But not for you, my love
Not tonight, my love
Love is Natural and Real
But not for such as you and I, my love
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my …
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can even feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my …

Spent a considerable amount of time this morning looking for the lyrics of a song called ‘I’m Living in the Room they found Saddam in’ by the brilliant Julian Cope but alas no luck

Still though what a name…

Cops in cars
The topless bars
Never saw a woman
So alone

The paper boy is working before he goes
Lying to the teacher he knows he knows
He didn’t and he should’ve
Brought his lines in yesterday
Ernie bangs the sound and the day begins
The letterbox is open and your cash falls in
I’ll meet you at the office
Just before the staff clock in

Fuckata Fuckata Fuckata Fuckata damage incorporated

Just waiting in the barbers here and this gem came on:

Fuck you to sleep, wake you up again, I go so deep, beat it up again
Girl, come and sit on my tongue again ‘cause I love to taste you, yeah
I can tell you been eating your pineapples, girl, your pussy taste like pineapples
Girl, when I hit your G, you feel like you gon’ be, baby, cum for me

Just let me rock, fuck you back to sleep, girl
Don’t say a word no, girl, don’t you talk
Just hold on tight to me, girl
Fuck you back to sleep, girl, rock you back

What fucking age are you listening to that shite, cop yourself on.

Don’t have me telling you again.
