Italy had a better team at the 2002 WC but Byron Moreno happened.
Cannavaro and Nesta both missed the Korea defeat with injury/suspension. That was arguably the best Italian team ever.
You had the likes of Nesta, Cannavaro, Maldini, Buffon, Totti, Vieri and Inzaghi at the peak of their powers.

The 2006 world final must have had the best set of players on a pitch at the one time in the past 30 or so years. A good few were past their best but so many great players on both sides.
Zambrotta was a class act.

I would say the midfield was nowhere near 2006 levels.
Perhaps not but that’s mainly down to Pirlo. If you look at 06, DDR was pretty much a novice and was suspened for most of the tournament.
Camoranesi, Perrotta, Gattuso, Barone was probably inferior to Di Biagio, Tommasi, Zanetti, Gattuso, Doni, Di Livio.
2002 had the likes of Totti, Inzaghi, Montella and Vieri at the peak of their games. There’s no real comparison to a peak Luca Toni and a peak Vieri
Luca Toni was an average enough centre forward. A decent player but nothing special
When Vieri was motoring he was some detail . By all accounts he was also a wonderful cricketer in his youth
