Davy Fitz- a thread for the non-believers

BT do a rugby magazine show weekly. Similar to most uk shows of this ilk it is a bit matey. Format is good though

3/4 regular presenters (2 professional TV people 2 ex pro players) 2 or 3 of these on each show.

Few ex pros- one or maybe 2 of these a week on for full show

1 current players as guest for 45 mins or so

Highlights of weekends games
Panel discussion of any of the hot topics from weekend (they wouldnt shy away from criticism of foul play similar to TSG)
Interview with guest player incl his thoughts on weekend action
Decent segment where the pros do a skills drill and explain some element of the game in simplified form

Its about 2 hrs so way too long but i watch in fast forward in bout 45 mins. Definitely room for a GAA show in some kind of similar form. Id say it costs BT fuck all and is tied into their TV rights for english premiership rugby

Not much talk about the love in with Davy and Derek McGrath in the aftermath of the match last weekend. Davy usually doesn’t publicly shower fellow managers with the love that was displayed last Sunday/Monday unless of course they are planning on working together in the not too distant future

Too many hens in thst henhouse

He wasn’t defending McGrath. He was defending himself but used McGrath to enhance his own position. Davy is too self absorbed to worry about anyone else.

I get that, but he’d relish the limelight that would go with the Dublin job…

I’m talking about a bigger hen house, a hen house where Foghorn Leghorn would fit right in

Derek McGrath is a lovely man.

“Crawl over crushed glass to get to a mic”

Joe Brolly has weighed in on the recent debate about GAA pundits, calling Davy Fitzgerald’s back and forth with Michael Duignan ‘good debate’ while claiming that the Wexford manager ‘craves the spotlight’.

Fitzgerald hit out at the Duignan after the Offaly legend criticised Wexford’s sweeper system following their All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Waterford last Sunday, with the duo then trading barbs in the media early last week.

Joe Brolly appeared on RTE’s Saturday Sport to discuss whether GAA pundits are too harsh when assessing players and managers, and stated that there must be scope for analysts to point out mistakes that are made on the pitch or the sideline.

Des Cahill then asked Brolly about the recent verbal battle between Fitzgerald and Duignan, and the Sunday Independent columnist gave a typically forthright response.

“I can enjoy Davy Fitzgerald as much as the next man but nobody craves the spotlight more than Davy,” Brolly said.

"I was behind Davy at the Leinster final and every time he knew the camera would come to him he would go hyperactive. I have no doubt watching him that that is all a part of the act.

“Don’t tell me that Davy loves the spotlight, he craves it. He wants to be the centre of attention at all times.”

The conversation then turned to the wider debate over sweeper systems before Brolly finished his point on Davy Fitz.

“The man would crawl over crushed glass to get to a mic and he loves publicity,” Brolly added.

"That’s fine but to say that it is unfair for Michael Duignan to take him on about the sweeper system? It is a huge debate in hurling.

“They are two big boys who are well able to handle each other and as far as I’m concerned they are meeting as equals. Davy is very quick to deliver his opinions and he delivers them strongly, as does Michael, and that is the essence of good debate.”

Christ. Talk about the por calling the kettle

I don’t see a single poor emigrant on that list. Well heeled, suited and booted.

Oh sorry, I just realised you included @maroonandwhite

That really is as good an exhibit of “pot calling kettle black” as you can get .

Davy to Dublin @Bandage @croppy_boy

Davy’s staying with Wexford, pal.

For deffo bud is he?

the problem with the system is that forwards are always outnumbered, there is never a consistant presence in front of the opposition goals so defenders have no choice but to carry the ball and the players in the middle third have to constantly run up and down the pitch making support runs and then tracking back.
When you accept that all teams are more or less at the same fitness level this level of running means they run out of gas at the end of each half
it also ends up with inside forwards being under pressure constantly because their touch has to be beyond perfect or they lose possession
finally if he wants the backs to be the ones doing the scoring then why not pick chim and McDonald in the half back line
its no more stupid than expecting matthew o hanlon to get you a score good enough to win a game
incidentally the idea that Waterford don’t have good enough defenders to compete without a sweeper is simply false
they have a selection of 8 strong athletic hurlers to pick 6 from behind a midfield of moran and barron they don’t need a sweeper

I’m hearing Davy to Dublin is a done deal.

I’m hearing otherwise.
Nightmare on Elm St 2

They were saying the same of Derek McGrath for months. The word out of Cuala is that Mattie Kenny has it.

What I heard is that Davy isn’t going back to Wexford and it’s because of the Dublin job.

I would be shocked. It would be hard to make sense of that decision unless of a falling out. I haven’t heard of an disharmony.
