Decent Journalism

Would make a great film if there was a conclusion.

Great read. As an aside, I was in Annecy this summer for a week. Beautiful part of the world and would recommend it.

Thatā€™s a brilliant article. And terrifying.

The last paragraph would send a shiver down your spine.

Thereā€™s so many twists to it

Iā€™m leaning on random psycho military guy

I quite enjoyed this article. Could very well end like this for me:

Read that earlier. Hard to say why itā€™s enjoyable but itā€™s an excellent read.

A follow-up to the George Bell article in the Times posted above:

Grantland is no more. Shame.

Just saw that on deadspin. Very disappointing news

I wonder is Simmons far away from launching his new project?

Is he not on HBO

Seems to suggest from the Deadspin article that he took his editorial team with him, presumably to launch his own site

They went to HBO with him.

He says he hasnā€™t decided where he is going to write yet. His podcast is just up under his own URL with HBO as sponsors. Him taking over Vice Sports and making it Grantland 2.0 has been heavily rumoured. He has said though that he was doing too much whilst at ESPN/Grantland and needs to decide what exactly he will be doing other than the podcast and the tv show.

The fact that he took editors with him though says a lot. He had others at Grantland like Rembert Browne who I thought would end up helping to write his tv show. Iā€™m guessing he was waiting for Grantland to fold before announcing what he was going to do.

Vice is now partly owned by Disney who ultimately owned and cancelled Grantland. Vice is too big at this stage anyway to be run by Simmons I reckon. Itā€™s worth hundreds of millions, it will have too much shareholder editorial control to just hand that over to someone like Simmons.

It would be Vice Sports. Shane Smith had tweeted when Simmons left ESPN that he could come to VICE. The two both put out social media hints, meeting together.

I did not know about Disney, just googling there, but they are very much a minority shareholder. Simmons on air presence is with HBO and that seems to be where the Disney relationship is coming from. Disney are only a minority shareholder, unlike ABC Television/ESPN, and ultimately want to make money. Simmons might not have fit with ESPN anymore but thatā€™s a different story to a company you have a minority stake in.

Vice Sports is a bag of shite and could do with becoming Grantland 2.0 frankly. Itā€™s a rumour though of course.

Iā€™m of the opinion now that Simmons was waiting for the Grantland collapse. He took those 4 editors in one swoop and demanded they told noone as he knew that would leave Grantland with no structure left. A lot of the Grantland staff writers contracts were coming up at the end of the month - Browne, Andy Greenwald, Wesley Morris (last month). I reckon in the next couple of weeks weā€™ll know what heā€™s going to do.
