After the successes of 1978 & 86, there was another quarter century of mediocrity. After making the final in 1990, they failed to make it further than the quarter finals in the next five World Cupās until Messi, the player of the World Cup in 2014 spearheaded their run to the final.

Mascherano is very important defensively. Messi is way better than Di Maria for Argentina. Di Maria gets so many great passes by Messi to put him into good positions to get a cross and ends up either hitting the defender in front of him or losing the ball
