Gardai launch probe into U16 hurling match violence
Gardai have launched an investigation.Gardai in Cork are investigating a brawl that broke out during an U16 hurling championship match last weekend which left three people needing medical assistance and another hospitalised.
The fracas, which is also being investigated by Cork county board disciplinary chiefs, occurred midway through the second half of the U16 Rebel Og East hurling championship clash between Valley Rovers and St. Vincent’s at Ballinora on Sunday evening. St. Vincent’s had scored two quick points to draw level before an adult ‘supporter’ ran onto the pitch and angrily confronted both the referee and a number of players.
According to reports, this led to “an appalling free-for-all” involving both adults and players, that left the referee with no option but to abandon the game.
The Garda probe was launched after a person who was injured in the fracas made a formal complaint.
Troubling to see the Ballinora club implicated, albeit indirectly, in this unsavoury incident. I’d imagine the trouble was caused by a few local “hot-heads” as the clubs participating have good disciplinary records. Locals I’d say…

Gardaí have interviewed more than 20 people as part of their investigation into a mass brawl at a GAA underage hurling match, which resulted in three young men receiving hospital treatment.
The Rebel Óg U-16 championship match had to be abandoned last month after witnesses said “an appalling free-for-all” broke out just after the start of the second half.
The scores were tied between Cork City northside-based St Vincent’s and Valley Rovers, from the Innishannon, when chaos broke out. It’s alleged that an on-the-pitch incident led to the intervention of an adult spectator and this quickly escalated into a major brawl involving both adults and teenagers.
The referee was forced to abandon the match which was held at Ballinora on July 20. Three teenagers were taken to hospital and one was detained overnight for observation.
The following day three juvenile players accompanied by their parents made an official complaint at Ballincollig Garda Station.
Superintendent Con Cadogan, who is leading the investigation, said that statements still had to be taken from other witnesses.
“In due course we will then prepare a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions,” the senior garda said.
Cork GAA County Board sources confirmed they were carrying out their own investigation. It is understood that the referee has delivered his report to the board’s disciplinary committee.

The best advice to give someone is “don’t go to cork”. It’s a troublesome spot down there.
