I felt it best to look up the Jarlaths comments, what seems to be the issue with them?
“I heard people saying the GAA painted ourselves into a corner. No, we didn’t. We applied the rules. That’s all we do, we just apply the rules,” he said.
“If people want to change the rules, bring a motion to Congress and we’ll change the rules.”
Either way, Burns said coaches should not be getting involved in on-field scuffles.
“It is wrong for a manager to go on to a field and touch any player or any official. None of this would have happened if managers, mentors and subs had stayed off the field and allowed the referee and the 30 players to do their business. The moment managers incur on to the field, they are entitled to be suspended, to face the sanctions, if the referee views that [behaviour] as being sanctionable,” he said.
And Burns said the McGuinness and Brennan cases were different.
“The Ger Brennan case was very simple, very straightforward. He was cited for the minimum contact with an opponent, there’s the sanction. That went through hearings, appeals, DRA [Disputes Resolution Authority], so it was a very robust process,” he said.

“The difficulty was because it came in the very last game of the league, people feel it was very disproportionate because Ger missed out for 12 weeks, not only with his county. But he also takes the under-10s in his club, he wasn’t able to attend matches, he wasn’t able to attend training, he shipped a lot of abuse on social media – totally unfair and which I would utterly condemn.
“Now the referee took a different view on that [McGuinness incident in Killarney]. Then whenever the CCCC meet, they have to consider whatever sanction is imposed, let’s say retrospectively, if the referee has decided not to act upon it, will that pass hearings, appeals and the DRA?
“They have to be cognisant of that because there’s nothing more embarrassing than something done in good faith at CCCC and then losing it at hearings.
“The referee was in the middle of that, the fourth official saw it [McGuinness incident], the referee referred to it in his report and left it at that.”
It appears to me as if it came down to the referees report and how each referee chose to report the interactions, but perhaps I’m reading it wrongly.
I do feel sorry for Ger, he’s a good lad, and suffered a very harsh lesson. But we cant have managers coming onto the field and getting involved in physical altercations.
My issue here would be with the referee in Killarney not reporting McGuinness, but perhaps he saw things different.
Reading between the lines, Hurson did his Nordie mate Jim a solid. Referred to McGuinness coming onto the field in his report but deemed it a thing of nothing. Therefore they couldn’t take it any further.
If you look at the incident again, there’s an official (either linesman or fourth official) who is looking straight at the McGuinness incident but does nothing. Said official might have told Hurson it was nothing. A bit like Conor Lane in the league final.
It was a terribly harsh punishment for Brennan but bringing his solicitor into it. For fuck sake, it’s an amateur sport, Ger. Cop on a small bit. Take your medicine - as severe as it was - and get on with it.
Ger’s been badly advised here. It’s plain as day the referees have handled both incidents differently, and anyone with a passing interest in GAA knows how sacrosanct a referees report is.
The solicitor is some wank for getting into this. When Vincent’s couldn’t save Ger he shoulda known he was rightly fucked.
Those in charge of Dublin football have lost focus big time
Brennan got a harsh ban but within the rules, McGuiness was lucky alright but his actions were less agressive ableit on a player.
The ref didnt red card McGuinness on the day, he got lucky, Ger was spotted on the day, I guess ripping an ear piece off stands out a bit more. The Dubs should get on with their own business and stop going down the McGuinness issue rabbit hole
The decline in Dublin attendances in football is staggering and no wonder, the manager/stand in manager wont do a hint of a presser, maybe if he did he could encourage a few supporters to come to the matches, it is all shaping up that Dublin hurlers will bring a much larger attendance to the Leinster hurling final than the footballers did to to the Leinster football
