This is exactly it. It would be more in Jarlath’s line to look at ways of blocking patently illegal transfers like the Shane Walsh one, without punishing the majority of genuine lads. Most of these transfers are to play with non-first teams in these clubs.

Even the Top players transferring are mostly for genuine reasons. Donal o Shea’s cousin plays with Cuala. His uncle is involved in the management team. He is living and working in Dublin. Jarlath wants to block this transfer.

If o Shea is willing to drive across the country to play with Galway then he should be playing with his home club too.

Yeah - no real difference in my eyes to the Shane Walsh one. Just because there are relations involved doesn’t really justify it.

Is his brother not with Faughs, why not join them?

And what if he feels 8 months of the year is enough to be driving across the country 3 times a week?

Shane Walsh not actually living in Dublin is the subtle difference here

I’m not sure Conor will be playing senior this year.

No surprise to see Kilmacud Crooks ruining it for everyone else.

Sure you wouldn’t have been able to transfer to Scoil if we lived in Jarlath’s world.

True that now that I think of it. Scoil were Div1 football and oscillated between Div1 and Div2 hurling in those days. In reality if we couldn’t have transferred in they’d have had no senior hurling team and would probably have dropped down a division or two at junior. What would be the harm in that you might say? Well I was coming from a club that had plenty of numbers and I would likely have been surplus to requirements at senior level (especially if I was working in Dublin). The Scoil senior hurling team in those days split evenly between the rooral contingent, the Dublin suburban contingent and the North Inner City Dubs. So if we couldn’t transfer in those Dubs wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play senior hurling or possibly hurling at all.
Joining a club like Scoil was also a valuable social experience. I used to take the u12 s out on a Saturday morning. That was a tough gig but you got a great sense of the challenges these kids were living through. Also made some great pals who lived in the inner city and never had any fear of the place.

Anyway apologies for getting a bit maudlin there.

Not at all. Your story proves Jarlath is talking scutter and playing to the gallery. There is thousands of stories like yours all across Dublin. Dublin Gaa and hurling in particular would be in a far less healthy state if it wasn’t for country people or ‘imports’ immersing themselves in Dublin clubs.

If he’s willing to make 100+ journeys for his county he should be making his 4/5 championship games with his club.

Faughs would have been fucked down through the years if Jarlath’s rule was in. They’ve no seemed to have turned the corner and are producing loads of “home grown.”

Interestingly, I met an old Faughs man over Christmas who lamented the lack of country players in their seniors. He reckoned they’d have more cuteness and be perfect foil for the young lads.

No club training required? You’re very generous with other people’s time!

Clubs are very understanding that they wouldn’t expect lads to be coming home for midweek sessions, especially once the season begins where it would be minimal impact done anyway. Most of these lads would be home Friday-Sunday to get training/games in anyway.

The rule should be you play county and club football in the same county imo. These cross county club transfers whilst still putting on the county jersey are a blight.

A blight? I’d say Donal o Shea will be the only one in that situation in Dublin Hurling championship this year. Probably a few more in football. 4 or 5 I’d say

I think what we’ve seen here is that there is no problem in Dublin GAA with transfers.

No harm for Jarlath to raise it and have it cleared up.

Some of the football transfers definitely have been questionable. You get the memo.

Bar the Walsh one which was well dodgy what other ones?

Paddy O’Connor playing for Sligo and Kilmacud.

St. Jude’s have a few dodgy ones too in Football who have no issue going across country to play I/C for 6 or 7 months of the year.
