It’s good for some books, but content is very patchy, I suspect it’s dictated financially. As a system it works really well.

Torrents aside there’s huge amounts out there. Different countries have different rules but generally once a book is 50 years old the copyright is ended,

No good for kindle

You may know this but it’s an interesting bit of trivia that you reminded me of

JM Barrie donated the royalty rights for Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street hospital. It receives all royalties. When the copyright expired a piece of legislation was passed to keep Peter Pan in copyright forever.
