There was no nuance. You gave a like rating to a racist comment. The audit trail doesn’t lie.

The soccer crowd getting very hot and bothered about a newspaper article from five years ago about an Ireland rugby tour from 37 years ago. No doubt they’re equally exercised about the partitionist Eire soccer team touring Chile just a few years before that in the early summer of 1974 just eight months after the military coup which saw Augusta Pinochet topple the democratically elected Salvador Allende with thousands murdered and disappeared. Social conscience Eamon Dunphy even signed up for that Chilean expedition.

Salvador Allende is one of my favourite Latin American socialist leaders, along with Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales and Manuel Zelaya.

The likes of Chile and Argentina had military dictatorships which were common at the time. There had been military dictatorships until very recently in Europe in Franco’s Spain and a few other places.

But those countries had football teams that would have been largely the same regardless of the government. The people in those countries loved football in part because it was a chance to transcend politics.

The South African rugby team by contrast was the living embodiment of apartheid, possibly the most evil government on the planet at that time.

What happened your Avatar? I hope you’re not abandoning the 12 rules pal.

Eire agreed to go Chile in May 1974 to play a soccer match in the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, the same stadium where only 8 months previously Pinochet’s troops were executing scores of civilians. And you don’t have a problem with that.

Few nice lines in that (ironically enough)

Watching the build-up to the main event, it doesn’t take long to twig that this is essentially a sport aimed at dumbasses. Fair enough, the stupid need entertainment too, but there’s not much in it for the rest of us. MMA is a sporting version of Love Island. With even tighter shorts. Just ridiculous.

MMA is such a small world, you could call it the Mickey Mouse Association. Aspersions are cast on the worth of Katie Taylor’s world titles because there ‘aren’t all that many professional women boxers’. But there’s almost 1,500 of them in comparison to the 900 or so professional MMA fighters.

That’s actually incorrect also. How many serious contenders in Taylors weight division? Two or three? It’s like track cycling.

I’d imagine a bear would be a tougher opponent than a human being.
