Eircom

Well the cunts have gone and done it now. Pirate bay has been blocked. I don;t even use the site but it’s an outrageous move on their part. Well I’m getting the fuck off their service now.

It’s like living in China.
They will lose alot of customers over this. I know UPC have told IRMA to take a running jump, so hopefully the others stand firm too.

I think the others are all owned by big foreign players who just won’t be dictated to.

Can you imagine the shit BT would get in back in the UK if they changed their policies here, it would set such a dangerous precedent. Same goes for UPC etc.

What will the next site to go. Rapidshare and sites like that could be at risk.

Spot on Rocko
Eircom’s climb down has no precedence in Europe
THere was no law that could compel them to do what they have done, I reckon the management didn’t want to spend the cash on a proper defence. They didn’t have the heart for a fight with a another sale coming up

:):clap::smiley:

hopefully a few more punters will follow Flano’s lead.

I’m on upc. Anyone want me to download anything?

I switched most of the services at work from Eircom about 6 months ago. I had a guy from their “customer rentention” department onto me last week whining about how they had lost so much market share, in both phones and broadband and they were really keen to get customers back. Said they had a total over haul of pricing and customer service etc, yet the figures he quoted were still way higher than the other companies. How other companies can still come in cheaper than eircom, when you consider the fact they nearly all have to pay line rental fees to eircom is mad.

Eircom are just reliant on people’s reluctance to change. Their business model is completely flawed otherwise. They retail their own product so much higher than resellers but there’s so many people in this country that are with them because of laziness or brand awareness that they can still survive with such shit products.

Hopefully this latest move will drive some people away but they’ll be left with the core customer base that appeals to them - phone and broadband customers who are with them because they know no better and are consequently less likely to be using torrents etc anyway.

The Pirate Bay has been throttled
25.08.2009
The controversial peer-to-peer site The Pirate Bay is to go offline after it emerged a Swedish court has ordered its internet service provider (ISP) with a hefty fine.

A Stockholm district court yesterday ordered ISP Black Internet to stop providing The Pirate Bay with bandwidth or pay a 50,000 fine.

The Pirate Bay, the worlds most popular torrent tracker with 22m users, is understood to be determined to stay up and various reports claim its owners have found a way to remain online.

The founders of The Pirate Bay were jailed in April after being found guilty of copyright violations in a Swedish court. They were also ordered to pay 3.5m in damages

Last month it emerged that one of the worlds biggest web caf owners Global Gaming Factory X planned to buy the company for US$8m. A shareholder vote on the deal is set for 27 August to decide if the acquisition will go ahead.

Last week Global Gaming Factory revealed a new commercial model for the service that involved compensating copyright holders if their content appeared on the service or have it taken down.

Last week it emerged that Eircom agreed with the music industry to block The Pirate Bay from 1 September.

Cable ISP UPC said there is no basis in legislation whereby it has to block access to The Pirate Bay.

1st September? I tried to get on it last night just to confirm what I’d heard and the page wouldn’t load.

I’m not on eircom here and it isn’t loading for me either. It must be a problem in Sweden. They are waiting on King Henrik to come in and fix it.

Illegal downloaders will have broadband cut off under new Mandelson plan

Internet users who illegally download films and music will have their broadband connection cut off under Government proposals due to be announced today.

The decision means internet users who share copyrighted materials with others will get warning letters, before having their connection stopped if they persist.

The move triggered anger among campaigners who claim it flies in the face of ministers’ desire for universal broadband access.

The decision will reignite speculation that Lord Mandelson made a secret deal with Hollywood mogul David Geffen earlier this month on the protection of the film and music industries.

The Business Secretary met with Mr Geffen, a co-founder of the Dreamworks production company, at Nat Rothschild’s villa in Corfu.
Mandelson met with Hollywood mogul David Geffen during his holiday on the Greek island of Corfu
Following this, he ordered civil servants at the Department of Business , Innovation and Skills to toughen up the proposals on illegal file-sharers.

The Government’s draft plan states: ‘The previous proposals, whilst robust, would take an unacceptable amount of time to complete in a situation that calls for urgent action.’

The then communications minister Lord Carter said in June that illegal downloaders should be sent warning letters and then considered for prosecution if they persist.

He said if that measure failed to reduce digital piracy by 70 per cent, Ofcom could then approach telecoms company BT to apply ‘technical measures’ to reduce connection speeds.

i’d say geffen and mandy are 2 of your poster boys alright

Wasn’t Pirate Bay shut down temporarily cos of some Swedish court ruling?

Ya. Kenneth Anderson is going to sort them out though.

Eircom is rebranding as “eu” (with a cumspot over the u).

Not sure why they ever messed with the original.

Dunno why they didn’t just rebrand as
