ENGLAND Supporters Thread - World Cup 2018, Russia Here We Come

Did they win the singing contest?

It wasn’t even a contest mate — they had it won before it even begun.

On Talksport this morning they were discussing whether or not Southgate should go.
Yesterday morning they were reporting that shops were sold out of waistcoats.
Sure you couldn’t make it up

The Irish fans would have won that. BEST IN THE WORLD.

Southgate took a job that no one wanted .

This is the type of introspection you get in a serious soccer country and traditional power like England. We’re all very proud of what Gareth and the boys have achieved over the past few weeks but the question does still need to be asked is Gareth the man to lead us to the greater glories over the next decade that all our emerging young talent would suggest we could achieve.

Contrast that with a Mickey Mouse soccer outfit like Eire. Lose 5-1 at home to Denmark in a qualifier play off and the manager gets a spanking new contract as reward for presiding over an utter shambles.

England are a traditional power like Waterford are a traditional power in hurling. One tournament win does not equal a traditional power. The Dutch have never won a World Cup yet are a much greater footballing nation than England

The Dutch also question their football and management . After the last campaign shambles Dik Advocaat left the job . He didn’t get another contract .

Is the England soccer team like the Limerick hurlers? Limerick were All Ireland contenders a few weeks ago…

No. Limerick are still contenders and England are done.

Limerick even have a song - Liam’s coming home

The Netherlands qualified for just 2 of the first 9 World Cups. Netherlands have missed out on qualification for 4 of the last 10 World Cups. England are a traditional superpower of soccer. The Netherlands are not.

English soccer is truly introspective. Maybe it’s time it took it’s head out of it’s ass.

Holland have been in 4 semi finals and 2 finals in the last 40 years. They also won a European championship in that period… They have far more pedigree than England.

But the English players all play in the epl

They have and agree they have better pedigree but Geoff’s point is that Eire soccer folk reward poor performance whereas serious soccer nations do serious analysis .

I would say England are much more similar to Tipperary. The home of the game. Tipperary are proud of calling themselves the Premier county, England is proud of its Premier League. Both great in the mid-60s, but suffered a long period of underachievement after that, generally find a way to mess things up in a manner hilarious to those who don’t like them, but still the team that others want to beat more than any other.

Their supporters have a bad reputation but are generally grand, knowledgeable followers when you actually talk to them.

I would compare this current England team to Tipperary 1987. Their best player is English. On the cusp of something big, lost a thrilling semi-final, still need a few better players to win the big one, but you sense something great is just around the corner.

Eire soccer types pontificating on what makes a great soccer nation. I’ve seen it all. Stick to changing the tyres lads.

Jeff is proud of England for losing a game they were expected to win

Harry Kane = donie o Connell ??

They were marginal favorites in the bookies. I didn’t expect them to win as Croatia have better footballers overall .
