He is saying on one hand they are absolutely useless team and lists all their failings and inadequacies. On the other hand he says they are talking through their hole that they overachieved.
So he thinks a team that is rubbish didnt overachieve by being beaten AET in WC semi final 
Everything else is just noise. The media, its coming home, the jingoism etc. Nowt to do with the football.
That makes no sense
It’s amusing how Eire soccer types get so worked up about England and the perception that the English might get a little bit excited and heaven forbid lose the run of themselves when their soccer team is going well. Eire are such a grounded lot the odd time they qualify for one of these tournaments.
Its amusing Geoff that the ‘home’ of football and a country that destroyed so many other countries with imperialism fucked up in a WC once again. This time though they got to a sf by beating nothing with the worst English team I can remember and were sure it was coming home

Fucked up in the World Cup? We’ve had a terrific World Cup. We lost out to a goal 10 minutes from the end of extra time in the semi finals to a superb Croatia team. We went further than Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain and Portugal. Some so called soccer experts predicted we wouldn’t even get out of the group.

Ye had a handier run to a WC final than a poor German side in 02. An achievement to beat panama Sweden Tunisia? England failed and I’m delighted

I wouldn’t say they failed. They achieved about what they should have based on the quality of their squad and the draw

We hammered that Germany team 5-1 in Munich. Our quarter final against Brazil in 2002 was the de facto final of that World Cup.
