ESPN's 30 for 30 and Other Sports Documentaries

Watched the final quarter there. Thanks for putting it up knew nothing about it. It cut off after an hour in the middle of sammy’s rant though? Is there much left after that?
It’d be well worth watching for the racism deniers on here but they’d probably just end up agreeing with Sam Newman etc. Whaddya gonna do :man_shrugging:

About ten minutes left after that. Worth finishing out. File is still working, so should be there for you to watch.

It was only telling me the whole show was an hour long though

Just watched the end. Depressing enough. That Sam Newman fella is the typical true blue aussie bloke/arrogant macho cunt and I suppose in fairness to him he articulated what a lot were thinking. Was he under any pressure to resign?
Is collective booing a big enough thing in the sport? Like how Beckham Ronaldo or Ashley Young or the likes are booed for their actions on and off the pitch?

Newman is a prick. He can be entertaining and he is very forthright in his opinion and to be honest, I would have enjoyed the footie show with him on it, his street talk segment used to be good. But at the heart of it, he is the typical racist bogan type Aussie. Back in your box, if you dont like it, fuck off.

Booing is huge in AFL. Refs get booed, players get booed. Very vocal in it. Its why at the time, and I admitted it here and spoke with @fitzy about it, I wasnt as pushed on the booing Goodes got at the time because he was a stager in his playing and a moany cunt on the field. However, I’m not sure who it was who said it or where I heard it, but it was pointed out that yes, some may boo because of the player and how he is playing, but by doing so, you are enabling all the racist cunts to use that as an excuse to boo and taunt as well. So in a non TFK manner, I backtracked and agreed that the booing of Goodes was totally inappropriate as like said, all it did was fuel the racists to be able to boo and abuse him because everyone was doing it. Some booed him for non racist reasons, like they would any player like Dangerfield, Selwood, Ablett, Schuey etc get booed now for ducking or flopping, or just to put the player off, but the vast majority booed him because he was getting too high and mighty and above his position as an aboriginal player and thats all he should have been.

Even now, people still call him a cunt for what he did to that girl. Even though, as explained better in “The Australian Dream” on that link there too, he did absolutely everything he could to absolve the girl and help her rather than criticise or denigrate her.

Yeah was thinking the booing could have been justified for other reasons. Like everything it’s never clear cut and anyone can justify their own actions and arguments while still thinking they don’t have a racist bone in their body. The celebration bit was revealing enough the way the lads all jumped on his back immediately at half time when it seemed in hindsight and with explanation a totally reasonable thing to do.

I think its the other doco that goes through that also in a bit more detail with bigger input from Goodes the background to it. Lewis Jetta did similar when playing for Sydney against West Coast and got a bit of flak over it, but he now plays for West Coast and is doing well there despite the media who tried stoke up some sort of simmering anger over the incident.

There is a lot of racist incidents that happen in AFL still, at least a couple per year. Whether it is monkey taunting, throwing bananas, or flat out racist abuse on social media, there is a deep undercurrent of it in the sport and in the country.

I lived there for a couple of years myself. A lot of people were massively racist. Aborigines are I’d say lower in the pecking order than travellers are here even. I never saw one driving a car for instance!

Depends on where you would be in Australia alright. I would have been mainly in Perth, but rural WA, particularly north, would have a big indigenous population. I lived and worked in Darwin for a few months too and that has a really big indigenous population. It would be rare for social circles to mix that much there too, everyone pretty much stays to their own. Its a deep rooted problem there though and it is not going anywhere for a long time to come

It’s tie we started calling out white Australians as - European Australians - or as they love abbreviations - ESOZs European settlers of Astralia

Four months later and I got around to watching the Final Quarter last week. Thanks for uploading.

It’s fairly astonishing. The Collingwood chairman guy is just a bizarre individual. How on earth did he say what he said, given what Goodes had just been through.

That Sam Newman is an odious individual.

That’s Eddie mcguire the Collingwood chairman. I remember him commentating with Marty on the international rules and he used present who wants to be a millionaire. Hardly a media novice which makes it even more surprising he’d make such a fuck up. He wasn’t holding back about the celebration thing either despite all the earlier controversy either which was even madder I thought. Couldn’t wait to stick the boot in. Theres a real culture in oz of ‘speaking your mind’ and being a straight talking bloke. Especially in sports analysis. Much more so than here anyway.

He’s a Celtic fan I believe, or said so on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.

He’s far removed from Sam Newman who is just an obvious attention seeker. But a real prick. McGuire is much more representative of Australian culture alright from what I can see. And he believes he’s just being a “good Aussie bloke” in saying what he says. But he can’t see the problem with the content.

As Harry O Brien says, McGuire is a casual racist. Not in your face about it, has black friends and generally doesn’t mind them, but simmering under the surface is an ingrained dislike of black people that subconsciously comes out now and then.

I hadn’t realised until recently that Harry O Brien now goes by Heritier Lumumba. Basically it was easier for him to be accepted with an Anglicized name rather than his real one. There is a huge issue now over his nickname of chimp whilst playing at Collingwood and is now being investigated.

New Last Chance U is out on Netflix. Last American Football one before they switch to basketball for the next season.

Is it set at the same place every year? I started watching the latest series (prior to this new one) but abandoned it after 4 or 5 episodes. Fat, loud mouth, coach Jason something or other with a shitty team called Independence. Found it fairly boring.

No. This is a new place this time. With a more empathetic coach I believe.

Great, another fat thick coach

It wouldn’t take much in comparison to JB :joy:

Good show though, I’ll binge it again

This was on BBC4 Storyville docs last week - a tough and fascinating watch. The two female coaches pretty much spend the whole time berating and bullying her. Shot in a fly on the wall style.

Its available on the i player for anyone with access - search for olympic dreams of russian gold
