Dembele wasnât average, he waa very good. Carrasco wasnât great but he gives them the width that they were missing against Italy. Basically we were totally outclassed. Depending on just work rate against a much better team doesnât work. The reason it works for Atletico and Leicester is because they have players like Koke, Griezmann, Saul, Carrasco and for Leicester Mahrez and Vardy with undoubted class when they do get it up the pitch

Thatâs about the most insightful comment that has been made about soccer in Eire during this tournament. Thereâs 100,000 of supposedly the best fans in the world out in France but barely an iota of interest in the country of supporting/developing any kind of a meaningful domestic league or as you said nurturing and developing basic skills at underage level.
As an aside, are there many other national coaches in France who get paid more than Martin OâNeill, a manger whoâs been little more than journeymanlike in his managerial career?
