I’m on a phone so I’m thinking I couldn’t be bolloxed… I will say fatigue played a massive part, inexperience too. I thought it needed fresh legs in the middle at half time. I was also surprised O Shea didn’t start… Going forward, today’s team will be our main men going forward and they will take confidence from the tournament.
In fairness to Ward he had spotted the danger straight away and was roaring at Duffy for leaving the huge gap for Greizman to waltz into. The more I think of it the more blame I would apportion to Duffy. You can say that the midfielders didn’t pick up the runner but Duffy made the more fundamental error
The shape mattered fuck all at that exact time. In the same way they forgot about shape when throwing themselves in front of everything at end of 1st half
You said he did it throughout the first half too. I haven’t seen any replays of any of the goals but Ward didn’t have a responsibility to track Griezmann everywhere.
A lovely piece and I concur, he simplified the three days rest…Gaelic games satisfy our tribal thirst, but nothing quite captures the hearts and minds of the nation like Irish soccer on the big stage. I’m delighted another generation of young kids got swept up in the hype like we all did in 88/90/94 etc… my nephew of 6has been going around like a full kit wanker for two weeks now, they can barely get him into his jimjams at night…for the larger nations they will never understand .
Walters was nowhere near fit either. Didn’t do anything when he came on.
Considering we were down to 10, Hoolohan had a shocker and Walters was playing on one leg we did extremely well to still keep the game alive in the last twenty minutes.
Hendrick probably our player of the tournament, Brady was also excellent throughout.

Yeah, not sure who decided Walters was fit twice when he wasn’t but that was disappointing. His effectiveness is directly related to his energy and physicality, pointless bringing him on if he wasn’t able to contribute.
Not exactly sure why people expect so much from Wes. He’s a 34 year old bantamweight who struggles to get a game with a relegated team when the chips are down. And he was pitched in against a Champions League midfield. He’s fine against a Sweden or a second string Italian team, but deny him any time and space and he’s lost.
I love Walters but I could not understand MON bringing him on when he did. I know we still had 11 men at the time and we needed a goal but the lad has barely played any ball in recent months. I assume MON knew we would be out on our feet and was thinking full scale long ball bombardment but I still would have brought on McGeady (frustrating as he is) or Quinn instead.
Watched the highlights back again this morning. We can have no complaints between the fatigue and mistakes but re-watching McClean failing to properly square the ball to Murphy had me in a mix of anger and sadness. Poor Murphy was hauled off 2 minutes later…he will curse McClean till the day he dies I’d say.
Because they are sheep who have drank down the Dunphy cool aid. It was the same with Reid. Absolute horseshit. Not Wes’ fault, he’s done very well for himself. And I was delighted for him moment against Sweden. But he’s where he is for a reason. As are most of our players. Everyone finds their level.
