That late Italian winner versus Sweden played into our hands - they had no interest tonight thankfully.
Will be interesting to see which way MON approaches the match on Sunday - bring back O’Shea, Whelan etc? Start Hoolohan? Leave Brady in centre mid? He surely won’t go two up front even though Murphy really worked hard and put himself about. Thought we looked tired and sluggish late on before Hoolahans chance and the winner.
Overall it was two good displays in the group stages with a shocker thrown in too. Thought progression from the group was gone after dropping two points versus Sweden but they dug it out tonight eventually. Some amount of late goals scored under MON which is always a good sign of any side.
Free game now v the French. Don’t think they’ve been particularly impressive so far. All the pressure is on them. Not without a chance but to knock the hosts out would be bordering on miraculous. Tonight has to have taken a huge toll, physically and emotionally. Tough to rest after that with them all as high as a kite.
