But nor did anyone else before then. He also patently didn’t suit his system.

He was excellent tonight but it’s overly simplistic to complain about his omission. We’ve heard it all before with different names being used. McCarthy, Coleman, McClean. All have had their moments but none have been as consistently brilliant as is claimed.

Long, for example, is clearly a better player off the bench than he is from the start. He is better against tired legs and he needs to play at full speed or he’s ineffective. But we still get complaints about him not starting in response to the tactic working brilliantly.
