Sadly the Buffon of old would have saved that and the earlier one that was perfect height for him. Love the guy and he has been one if the best ever, but time waits for no man.

Zazaâs run up was awful. Iâm a traditionalist and I like my penalty run ups to be traditional. Iâm a believer that a player should make up his mind what heâs going to do, and do it, rather than waiting for a goalkeeper to commit themselves in a such a pressurised environment when mental reactions can play tricks on the taker if theyâre undecided as to where to put the ball.

Pelle had it to put Italy two up with three penalties remaining between the two sides, Germany needed all 3 penalties to go their way after that. That was the single most important penalty of that lot - he puts that away we are in a semi final.
Penalties can be cruel but thatâs football.

Even worse 2 penalties remaining. Thing is they are all important. Whatâs stunning is how many of the first 10 were missed, some horribly. Muellerâs was an abomination.
It must be of consolation that Italyâs proud record of never having lost to Germany remains safetly intact after tonightâs draw and Germany are only advancing on the lottery system.
Pelleâs was crucial, that goes in then itâs the victory. He made a complete balls of it.
Better players than him have missed them. Iâm just proud of our lads overall, thank you for a wonderful tournament guys.

Saying Buffon should have saved the last penalty is fairly dumb and glib. He dived and extended his arm as far as possible to cover as much of that side of the goal as he could and then had to adjust and pull his arm back and down AFTER the ball had been struck. Itâs a cliche but it was âtoo close to himâ and theyâre very hard to save when youâve already committed.

If we were talking a normal top level keeper, then I would agree, it is tough to adjust when you are already diving. Weâre talking about one of the best to ever stand between the sticks though, so the criticism is valid. Buffon in his prime saves that penalty, and even more so saves Hummelâs penalty, which although well struck, was the perfect height for him. The loss is clearly not his fault, he didnât miss penalties like his teammates, and Neuer made one outstanding save in the shootout. He would love to have those two back though.
