Us giving up the claim on the six counties in the GFA did not change the name of the country. It is still Ireland. Contrary to your belief.

The Republic of Ireland is merely it’s description, just as The Republic of South Africa is the description of South Africa. A description is not the same as a name.

Ireland is a 32 county island which is partitioned between Éire and the Northern Ireland part of the United Kingdom. Soccer is also partitioned along the same lines of public international law. As an aside, I’ve just finished a very good recently released book on the subject - The Irish Soccer Split written by Cormac Moore. You should have a read of it, as you have a real knowledge vacuum here. If we were talking about rugby, hockey, cricket or just about any other sport, you’d be correct to refer to Ireland as there is only international team in those sports which represents the entire island. Soccer is a curiosity in sporting terms in that it fields two sides in international competition from the island of Ireland.

I’ve just booked accommodation for four days from June 15th to 19th in the pretty beach resort of Arcachon on the Atlantic coast, conveniently situated just six hours by train from Lyon for the Ukraine-Ireland game. I may also take in the Belgium-Eire match in nearby Bordeaux on the 18th.
