That is fuckin mental. It should make the final round of group games interesting for a whole heap of nationalities youād think. Was this all part of Platiniās plan to maximise tv ratings I wonder!
Am I right in saying that if we finish 3rd, we may have to wait until the next night to cheer on some other country that would help us get into the 2nd round by beating another potential 3rd placed team?
Edit: I have just looked up the fixtures and our group is the final 2 group fixtures to be played. Avoid 2 defeats and surely weāll have something to play for? Even a draw against Sweden and a loss to Belgium might mean thereād be a chance to get through so long as we beat Italy?
Yep, thatās one of the advantages in being in our group. There are downsides for the group winners (in not getting to play a 3rd choice team) but that wonāt really bother us.
We are in the worst group possible when it comes to opposition for last 16.
Winners play runners up of group D, where as in other groups as you said they play the 3rd place teams. This also applies to group F.
However the runners up in group F get to play runners up in Group B, where as the runners up in our group play the winners in group F. Only the runners up of E & D have to meet winners of groups, all other group runners up meet other group runners up.
So our group has the worst possible outcome draw wise in terms of progression.
If we win the group:
Hard to pick the runners up in group D, Croatia perhaps(second to Spain), not that this is likely to concern us.
If we come second
Likely winners of Group F would be Portugal youād imagine though you wouldnāt rule out Austria as Portugal, Ronaldo aside arenāt too special.
If we come third:
Itās either the winner of group A (probably France) or the winner of group D (probably Spain)
Third place obviously putās you in the worst possible draw, but there isnāt too much between the likely opponents for 1st & 2nd IMO.
Fair enough. But I think weāre most likely to come third and will always get a group winner if we come third and I think we have a better chance of qualifying in third because we play last. But itās all very marginal.
Ah ya absolutely but the Belgians/Italians are getting a raw deal.
As an aside I did a predictor thing there and I predicted a Spain/Germany Final with a Spanish win. Austria were the surprise package of the tournament making the semis, knocking out England in the quarters.
What determines who the best 4 third-place teams are? Obviously points, goals etc but, for example if Ireland and Slovakia were to finish with equal records of P3 W1 D1 L1 F3 A4 how would they be separated?
This is what the whole tournament looks like according to bookie odds. The 4 that get through as 3rd place are a little random but as they are outsiders they have no real impact on the draw. Just view them as interchangeable goon teams.
They were Romania, Sweden, Ukraine and Turkey.
Winner of Group D [Spainās group] and winner of Group A [Franceās group] have the two nicest paths on paper as they avoid a group winner until the semis.
Spain and Croatia look interesting options based on this.
