They had a poor enough manager for World Cup 2018 qualification I think. Conte and Mancini are Premier League winning managers while the fella in between had won nothing as a coach I think.

I am not sure how good they but the Italian camp looks very happy and together .
Having a top level club manager makes a huge difference at this level I think.
Conte had them purring in 2016
