Europa Conference League - Knockout Round

Individually the Norwegians were poor but Celtic found their formation difficult to penetrate … mcgregor should have dropped deeper to take ball instead of carter vickers starting every attack … something very naive about Celtic performance …

That was just poor really for most of that.

Not sure we had anyone who played well.

Hart probably didn’t have a chance with any of the goals
Juranovic put in a decent cross and linked well enough with Forrest near the end but gave it away a few times and seemed to switch off for the second goal
CCV gave it away far too often
Starfelt did nothing on the ball - they seemed to want him to have it.
Taylor was really poor
McGregor was ok on the ball but they moved the ball around him very easily. He won a few decent tackles in fairness when things weren’t going our way
Rogic was poor. Touch was off all night and he didn’t look sharp
O’Riley started poorly but improved as it went on and caused them problems. Again seemed to tire though
Jota had possibly his worst game. That was a decent chance near the end and GG had done the right thing in staying onside but that was a poor pass.
Abada didn’t have a good game either. Should have done better with his header chance
Maeda took his goal very well. Maybe unlucky with the one the keeper saved. Looked like he’d cause them problems but then we couldn’t seem to get the ball to him.

GG wasn’t great. They looked smart enough to figure him out. Won a decent ball back to get us a chance and might have had a good chance near the end until Jota gave it away. The timing of his runs was poor.
Hatate played one lovely pass to Jota. Looked tidy otherwise but even his touch was a little off at the start.
Forrest actually had a few nice touches. Let their full back get away from him once that really annoyed me but he linked play well. Thought he had a chance to shoot near the end.

The Ange way is a bit vulnerable to that. He wants the centre backs to play those passes and if McGregor isn’t on then the full backs drop in there too and then the attacking midfielders to make angles. But they had it very well figured out in fairness and let us get frustrated with our passing back there.

The word naive is synonymous with Celtic performances against teams outside of Scotland, regardless of their stature. Has been for years.

Playing in a poor league where they are part standard bearer is obviously a concern.

Bitton
Rogic
O’Riley

Maeda
Giakoumakis

Wow!

Chucking it to focus on the league?!

Looks like we’re prioritising the weekend alright.

Not very welcoming weather in Bodo. Think the supporters’ planes landed a few minutes ago after multiple attempts.

Brian Kerr thinks Ange has dropped the likes of McGregor after his first leg performance.

That was abysmal. We could get hammered here.

Terrible by Welsh and Bitton. Not sure Hartson’s criticism of Scales is fair. He was breaking his hole to get back because of the earlier fuck up by the other two.

This could get messy … Celtic are very shaky …can’t string a pass together

What in good fuck is going on with Celtic!? Is big Ange just aiming for the league or what’s the craic?

Solbakken looks like he would be a fine transfer addition

This is still well achievable …need a rocket up rogic and bitton and start testing their keeper, awful wind there …

Definitely aiming for the league.

yes, focusing on the Hibs game

Well that was a comprehensive doing.

Exposes a few myths about the squad anyway. Starfelt and Hart have made errors but have had some positive interventions. Ralston, Welsh and Scales look a long way off the standard required. They’re not comfortable on the ball and are getting brutally exposed. And it’s affecting their confidence. We’re standing off them defensively, even Ralston who is usually a front foot defender.

Bitton looks equally lost out there but it’s a tough ask on him with O’Riley anonymous and the predictable passes into his feet. Still his basic ball skills and movement is a level below what any of their midfielders offer. Rogic had a horrible start to the game and has continued to be erratic but he gets some credit for getting on the ball. O’Riley looks like an MK Dons player.

Forrest is a bit like Rogic. Ineffective and physically weak but some of our few positive moments have come when they’ve been on the ball. Similar enough for Maeda maybe but he’s been involved less and Scales behind him is having a nightmare.

Giakoumakis has barely had a kick. When he has, it’s been similar to everyone else.

Not much value in chasing this game at this stage but it’s alarming how indecisive and ponderous we’ve been when they just drop off and press only Bitton. And our defensive shape is worse. O’Riley is missing from the midfield shape and our back four are just back pedalling.

Apart from all that it’s there for us.

In fairness they are made to look worse by the fact they’ve not options in front of them …
O Riley looks to really lack a yard of pace …
Still it’s an awful place to be - chasing a game on a freezing , artificial pitch playing into a gale … second half will tell a lot …

It’s probably not fair to make definitive judgements on the likes of Scales when he’s been pitched in with 4 or 5 other second string players in tough conditions, but he’s looked way off it. I think I’ve seen enough of Welsh though to know he’s not the answer. Forrest has had his day now and it’s O’Riley or Rogic rather than both against stronger opponents from now on. I’m not sure where I stand on the team selection in terms of not going with our strongest side.

That looked a penalty to me.
