That’s one for the Things I Learned Today thread. I always assumed the earliest sunset was on 21 December but it seems it’s always around 12, 13, 14 December.
The longest night is the 21st rather than the earliest sunset, or around it at least, sometimes its a day either side of the 21st.
The latest sunrise is usually a week or so after the solstice.

This one of the Carrigrohane Straight from a few years back is a particular favourite of mine.
I was out earlier and it was a remarkable sky.
I remarked on it to my father beside me who agreed.
