Lads, if an electric shower is going really hot then freezing, is it related to the limescale build up and it can be cleaned/cleared or is it just time to bite the bullet and buy a new electric shower?

As said previously, more than likely the flow pressure of water causing it to overheat and over work itself. It may be a small blockage or it could be fucked. Shouldnt be too much to fix if the unit is still working fine.
There’s a release bearing just in front of the thermostatic valve that’s almost certainly jamming due to a particle of limescale wedging the release. Take off the casing and you’ll practically see it yourself.
If this doesn’t work you should contact your local authority regarding the water pressure. You’re in good stead with the LA by now I trust, that other business must be forgotten by now.
Clogged filter. Turn off the water feed to the shower. Turn off the electricity. Make sure the water feed to the shower is off.
Make sure the electricity is off.
Take off the cover, unscrew the filter. Some gunk will drain out. Fish out any remaining gunk. Wash the filter out and re-seat it. Make sure it’s tight but don’t overtighten it.
Turn the water feed to the shower back on. Make sure it’s not leaking around the filter. Put the cover back on. Turn the electricity back on. Have your mother in law check the shower for temperature.
If any of his is unclear or beyond you don’t attempt any of it.
