Fascinating discussion on the merits of Ulster football

Take your beating with some dignity.

General Melchett in Blackadder goes Forth sums up your sort of delusion best.

“If nothing else works, a total pig-headed unwillingness to look facts in the face will see us through”.

You’d be better off taking your own advice as you are incapable of besting me in a debate, I’m out of reach for a chump like you.

There was a stat quoted on one of the daily papers during the week that in Round 4/Last 12 Qualifiers, beaten provincial finalists over the years had only won 20 and lost 36 of 56. After yesterday, that now reads won 20 and lost 38 of 58.

For whatever reason, beaten provincial finalists seem to have a major problem in refocussing and regrouping.

I have comprised a fact based theory that corrects your assertion of teams not being able to regroup being the reasoning behind that stat.

It’s do with Ulster teams coming into play in that stage and how they are better than teams from other provinces.

If this thread doesn’t convince Rocko to bring back the ignore function nothing will.

Your fact based theory in respect of Ulster performances in the qualifiers in 2014 looks somewhat flawed in light of the following set of results.

Derry were beaten at home by Longford in Round 1 of the Qualifiers.

Fermanagh were beaten by Laois in Round 1 of the Qualifiers

Down were beaten by Kildare by 10 points in Newry in Round 2 of the Qualifiers.

Cavan were beaten by 11 points at home in Breffni Park by Roscommon in Round 2 of the Qualifiers.

Antrim were beaten by a Division 4 side Limerick in Round 2 of the Qualifiers

Monaghan were knocked out of the championship by Dublin - hammered by 17 points.

Yet we still had the highest proportion of the the teams in the final 8 - and that was on a bad year!

If you do the sums you might find that the 5 counties of Connacht with 2 quarter finalists had 40% representation.

The 9 counties of Ulster with 3 quarter finalists and the 6 counties of Munster with 2 quarter finalists, both had 33.3%.

7 teams play in the Connacht Championship, mate and every province is guaranteed one team in the last 8 so once again your point has been made redundant. At least try and up your game, I like being challenged, I’m an Ulster man - I don’t like people rolling over.

That’s game, set and match.

The barometer of success I focus on is the Sam Maguire roll of honour and not making it to the quarter final. You have to read a long way down on it before you find Cavan & Down on 5.

We had a war to take care of. Since the troubles drew to a conclusion, Ulster has been the top dog.

You lost though.

The time came to switch from physical force to the ballot box. Our goals are still achievable, we’ve just got Derry back

Good jesus where is the ignore button?

At least they put up a fight unlike the cowardly cunts who stood idly by

I did say counties of Conncaht. In any case New York don’t compete in the All Ireland Championship. They are the only side who compete in the four provincial championships who do not gain entry to Round 1 of the Qualifiers and the commencement of the All Ireland Championship. So even if you’re insisting on counting London as a county of Conncaht, there’s still only 6 in the All Ireland Championship proper.

Conncaht, Ulster & Munster all had 33.3% representation in the 2014 quarter finals.

Try and up your game. I like being challenged.

No, they did not.

Every province is guaranteed one team in the last 8 regardless, something you have conveniently ignored, so in effect Connacht had 1 of their five other participants make the last, Munster likewise. And when you delve further into the path of their routes then you can see that they had a soft path with both sides just needing wins over Sligo and Tipperary, Sligo got blitzed by 25+ points by Mayo last week and were knocked out by London in 2013. Tipperary were hammered by Tyrone last week and were a Division 4 side in 2014, clearly they are two poor sides.

Meanwhile Monaghan needed wins over a Div 1 and 2 side on their way to last 12, they then had to beat another Div 1 side to make the last 8. Armagh needed victories over two Div 3 sides - both of whom were promoted from Div 3, a win over a Div 1 side and the 2013 All Ireland semi-finalists and another win over a Div 2 side.

Ulster leads the way once more.

I reckon there’s a fair chance that this call-and response between these two is being written by just the one person.

I’ve been having a think about the best Ulster XV (and subs) over the past 25 years and came up with the following. Probably forgetting someone but here it goes:

  1. Mickey McVeigh

  2. Sean Marty Lockhart

  3. Barry Owens

  4. Karl Lacey

  5. Henry Downey

  6. Conor Gormley

  7. Dessie Mone

  8. Anthony Tohill

  9. Sean Cavanagh

  10. Brian Dooher

  11. Greg Blaney

  12. James McCartan

  13. Mickey Linden

  14. Peter Canavan

  15. Stevie McDonnell

  16. Brendan McVeigh

  17. Tony Scullion

  18. Ricey McMenamin

  19. Kieran McGeeney

  20. Frank McGlynn

  21. Paul McGrane

  22. Oisin McConville

  23. Paddy Bradley

  24. Stevie O’Neill

  25. Benny Coulter

  26. Brian McGuigan

Toughest choice was between McDonnell and Bradley and McCartan and McConville.
