Bought the complete collection on DVD recently. Such a quality show but one thing I have noticed about it is its complete and utter racism (someone touched on this before - could have been Fingal Raven/NCC).
Examples:
I do apologise for Marcel. He’s from Barcelona you see.
O’Reilly the useless Irish builder who, when waiting in the bar for Basil to get rid of Sybil, helps himself to a glass of Guinness.
Stubs the reputable English builder.
Basil quizzing him on the phone as to whether the famine is still going on in Ireland
Sybil referring to him as a useless Irish oaf.
The German episode of course.
Not offended by it at all but thought it was worth pointing out (again). There is another scene where Basil gets a fright when a black doctor comes in to examine him but such ‘comedy’ was rife on the TV back in the 70s.
Watched the Holy Grail the other night. I hadn’t seen it in years, still not as funny as the life of Brian, but never realised that it was Connie Booth who was the same weight as a duck.
Racism was a big part of british comedy back then.
There was one series, who’s name I cant remember, starring the black bloke who was in eastenders, and the main joke was that a black man was now living in a nice white area.
The shows Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes used these differences in attitudes as the source of most of its humor.

I don’t know, some classic scenes in the holy grail. This being one of my favourites
