I notice from our Hall of Fame thread that no women featured in the list
Are there any credible female artists? I was listening to Kate Bush’s (no jokes keep it serious) ‘Hounds of Love’ album on the way in this morning and its fucking brilliant. I think that ‘Wuthering Heights’ is one of the greatest songs ever as well.
Patti Smith had a great album in ‘Horses’ and PJ Harvey has had some good albums as well particularly ‘To Bring you my Love’.
All that said they are still women so how good can they really be?
I gag for PJ Harvey’s ‘Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea’ album.
It’d rank up there with anything I’ve listened to in the last 5 years, smashing stuff.
I agree on ‘Wuthering Heights’ being a great song but I’ve never listened to a Kate Bush album in full. Ditto with Patti Smith despite being aware that ‘Horses’ is widely recognised as a stunning album.
I’ve just consulted with my mp3 player and out of hundreds of albums the only female stuff I’ve got is some Beth Orton, Cara Dillon, Gemma Hayes, Goldfrapp, Juliet Turner, Kathleen Edwards, KT Tunstall (how the fook did that get on there!), Nina Hynes, Norah Jones and some Lisa Hannigan/Vivienna Long. That’s not a lot really.
Don’t a lot of you like the The Yeah Yeah Yeahs or whatever they’re called? They’re a bunch of birds, no?
Just a bit more on Wuthering Heights. I heard some dude go on about it on one of those Channel Four countdown shows. He said that he remembered hearing it for the first time on the radio in 1978 when it was released. He said that he thought the radio was broken at first when she lets that scream out of her at the start. Then he said that when he heard the music starting up he knew that we were dealing with something really special. The video is class as well - her dancing around the moores. She was sixteen when she wrote that for fuck sake - discovered by Dave Gilmour from Pink Floyd. I would have loved to have been around when that came out - it must have shook music to its rafters
PJ Harvey as mentioned above is class. Other than that not too many I could name - some wonderful voices out there like Lisa Hannigan and Sinad O’Connor but not much in the way of quality songwriting. Joni Mitchell’s Blue is a superb album. I think iamthelaw has mentioned that before in past discussions, not sure though.
Forgot Joni Mitchell - Blue is a fantastic album. Sinead O’Connor has a fantastic voice as had Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield etc
A name has sprung to mind that I can’t believe I forgot - Nina Simone. ‘Nina Simone and Piano’ is one of the greatest albums ever made - and she wrote most of the stuff on there herself
Did you know that PJ Harvey was name as one of the msot influential Irish people in the world and her as English as anything… what’s that about?
