Fifa 08

Got this for nothing for the pc but it’s not the next gen version, although still more promising than I expected. So against all my better judgement I went out and bought the X360 version yesterday and I have to say I’m impressed so far.

The graphics are top class, the depth of the game is way beyond Pro Evo as usual and the playability isn’t half bad at all. It’s early days to judge but although the game is a touch slower than Pro Evo it’s highly customisable in terms of passing assistance and so on which makes it as tricky as you want it.

I wouldn’t have considered buying FIFA a week ago but having read a couple of reviews I was tempted to give it a go and I’m glad I did. Played one SRFC v BFC match as well which ended goalless.

do the players look realistic (i.e. is crowe a fat weasly looking prick??)

For the Eircom League teams they don’t. The Celtic players aren’t brilliant either. Most of them are just generic faces that have a resemblance to the real life player. Some of them are real faces though - Naka for one. At Barca they all looked perfect.

My mate bought this for the x360 and said he was playing it for 4 hours last night and only managed to score 2 goals. He reckons it’s good but much harder than previous ones, which is a good thing apparently.

I got two myself in about half that time. One for big Jan away to St Mirren, and one with Messi for Argentina against Ecuador (a 2-1 defeat and a 1-1 draw respectively).

The goal with big Jan was class because I was in “pro” mode where you just control one player and you call for passes and make runs and hold the ball up or whatever. Played 90 minutes with the big man being marked by Van Zanten and I got no change at all until on the hour I called for a short pass from Scotty Brown. Took it on and swept it out to Aiden. Little dart then for the front post before changing to the back post and Aiden picked me out perfectly and I nodded home.

Great movement rocko. That’s what it’s all about at that level.

Hmmmm, I was thinking of getting the new Pro Evo for my PSP for when I go on my travels but Fifa sounds interesting. I don’t buy into the whole Fifa is shit and Pro Evo is class snobbery that’s out there but I have Fifa 06 on the PSP and it’s rubbish. Having said that Fifa 2003 on the PS2 was class imo. I’m a little torn now. Granted on the PSP it won’t be near as good as on X360.

Think I’ll pick up the new Football Manager for my travels too.

Imagine, no work and playing computer games all day. Marvellous. Just marvellous.
