FIFA 2018 World Cup Thread

I have a feeling those figures Squires posts from the ABC may be Sydney metro only, as I believe over 3.5 million people watched the game in Australia last night.

Click into the replies to Squires’ tweet. There was another few million watching the football.

The Australia soccer team are really winning a lot. Odds on now to exit the World Cup in the group stages for the third successive tournament and languishing at 36 in the FIFA rankings. For a dominion that prides itself on its sporting prowess, Australia really are shit at soccer.

The Wallabies were in the Rugby World Cup final in 2015 and won the Rugby Championship as recently as 2015.

Geoffrey, it’s really getting kinda creepy how you follow me around the place. I’m going to ask you to stop replying to me please on every fucking thread I post on as you’re trying just a little bit too hard and it’s a little bit weird.

The Socceroos are the current Asian champions, mate.

Maybe the Aussies didn’t watch the rugby because it’s a meaningless friendly and the Aussies are serious winners of important matches like the RWC, whereas the Irish rugby fans watch that shite because they’re a pack of posers and that’s the biggest match they can win.

Yes, I alluded to that when I said they were winning a lot.

wow

sensational considering the Ireland Oz game was a test

Bad offside call there a few minutes ago.

The logical endpoint of VAR is for offside decisions to be entirely taken out of the hands of linesmen/lineswomen.

You can rule out a goal for offside by reviewing it, you can’t undo a decision where an official erroneously flags for offside and prevents a legitimate goal.

I think by and large match officiating at top level association football is of a good standard and you don’t need VAR to undermine them. Sure, you’ll get the odd crooked cop like Michael Oliver but that’s a different story.
