The referee was clearly communicating with someone at the TV monitor and covered his lips whilst talking. Not a totally outlandish claim tbh.

Ref getting a hard enough time when really it should be the 4 referees looking at the screens in some warehouse. It was them that told the referee he should look at the handball again, hard for him not to give the penalty in that atmosphere if 4 fellow officials are saying it is one. Same for the Ronaldo incident, I’d say the ref thought it was nothing but again had to do something when the VAR lads got in his ear saying he got it wrong.
You get the feeling that late goal they conceded was a hammer blow to Portugal and signals the death knell for them in this tournament. The players were fuming and very disappointed at the end that they did not top the group. It’s clear they fancied a pop off Russia and the easier passage. They have a scapegoat now to blame (the ref there) when it all goes wrong. I think they’re going to find it hard to lift it against Uruguay after feeling wronged so it’s very much advantage Suarez and co now.

I was trying to think there of RTÉ commentators from past World Cups in the last 20 years outside the lads involved this time and the late Jimmy Magee. Can you think of anyone else? It’s generally been the likes of Hamilton, Magee, Alkin and Canning. Eames and Kenny flit in and out. Was there a Gary Moran at one stage or was he an amateur golfer? Not sure if Con Murphy ever did any commentary. Was Gabriel Egan always a radio man? I have a feeling he was on TV for one tournament.
Yeah, I can’t place the specific tournament/s but Egan definitely did a small bit of television commentary.
Open to correction but I don’t recall Gary Moran commentating.
Peter Collins did some commentaries in recent times.
Darragh Moloney too obviously before he became the presenter.
