I haven’t listened to the actual audio of that for four years (before now, I’m listening to it as I write this) but I was playing it on a loop in my mind from approximately 5:40pm this evening.

The look of happiness on the faces of the people from 0:49 on in this clip makes me sort of weepy, especially the beautiful girl who momentarily peeked out from behind the baldy chap. The 1986 World Cup is the pinnacle of all sport ever. It’s almost as if actual real people used to attend World Cup finals rather than corporate types.

What’s clear from this world cup is that the powers that be need to sit down and sort out the hand ball rule and the hounding of refs to use VAR. I think it has been a great introduction to the game but a few kinks need to be ironed out.
