Much harder to win a European Championship than a World Cup.
In a World Cup, you can pace your run, you draw dross like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Panama etc.
In a European Championship forget about it, Italy have had some stinkers of groups in the European Championships of late - in 2008 we had France, Holland and Romania, in 2012 we had Spain, Croatia and Ireland and in the 2016 we had Belgium, Sweden and Ireland.
You go into the knockout part of it and you have big games right on top of each other, 3/4 days rest after each big test.
The World Cup allows more time to recover and the ability to conserve yourself at the start.
