FIFA World Cup 2010 - Group Stage

Bandage as a goalkeeper should Green have got more of his body behind that shot.

If previous post world cups teach us anything its that Rob Green can expect a very hostile reception from the West Ham crowd.

Beckham can tell him that at half time.

Yes. Page 4 of the goalkeeping handbook: ā€˜Body behind the ballā€™.

If you mishandle it, thereā€™s a good chance itā€™ll rebound up onto your shoulder, chest or even head and you can gather it at the second attempt.

Good advise Bandge.

Chiles apolgies for the interuption in the Hd covearge. Didnt mention they missed a goal though.

If history shows one thing, its that its very hard to win a World Cup without a competent goalkeeper. Felix for Brazil in 1970. The goalkeeping problem is the biggest threat of the World Cup not returning to the home of soccer.

Iā€™m actually writing a book on goalkeeping with Alan Kelly (Junior) and Gerry Peyton - Iā€™ll post more about it in the coming months.

The English are long ball merchants. Their domestic league must be horrible to watch.

Dunphy is dead right, this long ball mentality is killing England and English footballā€¦hang your head in shame runty

Cappello wanted to bring Scholes back shows me that he hasnt got a midfield play that keep the ball. I think Usa have had 60 percent of the ball. England are no Inter Milan thats for sure.

Looks as though KIB man was right yet again, King doesnā€™t even last more than 45 minutes

Are you telling me Ledley King has gone off injured. :o

England could do with bringing Rooney in off the bench, he is badly missed in this English side

Fabio must be reeling, firing on the subs here. Some couple of weeks for Jamie C, 3 Pool players on the pitch, only right given their stellar season. Heskey a failed Liverpool player, and another one on the bench in Crouch. Priceless.

Itā€™s a pity that Englandā€™s group isnā€™t more difficult. Their squad is looking a bit flimsy here - 'keeper issues, King joining Ferdinand on the sidelines now, lack of a playmaking and controlling influence in midfield, Milner hooked after 29 minutes and so on. They should still emerge from the group without much hassle but Carragher/Terry must be one of the slowest centre back pairings around and I look forward to seeing them being torn apart over the next couple of weeks.

Serbia or Germany will dispose of them with ease come the round of 16

Even that bit of panic there with Rooney going through, albeit he was flagged offside, came from yet another hoof upfield in Heskeyā€™s general direction. The ambition to get it down and pass it is non-existent.

Well said Bandage, feel free to bump my laugh at England thread. The tabloids might be releasing those 3 stories they have in cold sooner than they thought.

A true legend

I remember starting out as a young goalkeeper (7-8), I watched a sort of training programme with Bonner and Payten showing the basics of goalkeeping to kids(I think it was on the Den). One of the first rules was to get your body behind the ball and make what Bonner called a ā€œcup shapeā€ out of your frame to maximise the amount of your body that was behind the ball , if only green had seen this inspirational programme.

Says it all about the quality of this England team when they will be crying out for Gareth Barry after this game and he will walk back into the team

theres a lad I work with who has been bigging up England for ages and how theyā€™ll win. I was telling him they are average on the wings, no second striker and no keeper. he says, sure they dont need a great keeper, only an average one will do with such a team ahead of him. cant wait to see him monday.
