Finland v Ireland - Nations League - Wednesday, 14 Oct, 5pm

If you could win a game by your striker holding up the ball or being a nuisance for defenders weā€™d be sorted

At no real point in the 3 games, up until the final ten minutes in Finland, did we truly resort to corners and long free kicks aimed to Shane Duffy. Most close chances were missed not by his giant head, but by the inability of professional footballers, when placed in a goalscoring position with the ball at their feet, to kick the ball past opposition players into the goal.

My kingdom for a Stephen Elliott at this stage.

Theyā€™re holiding it up so our midfielders can arrive late and then hold it up some more

Pukki was backup to Anthony Stokes at Celtic, guys.

For context.

So a player canā€™t improve?

Not Stokes anyway thats for sure.

He can but Pukki plays in the English Championship now.

Heā€™s not a world beater.

If only we had a Tommy Coyne.

Difference was Finland had kamara in midfield and pukki up front. Hopefully Parrott breaks through and helps our problems up front. Midfield is a massive problem going forward. Lot of talk about Molumby of which i was one but im undecided on him, has a lot of work to do. Kamara only play for rangers but looks on a totally different level to premier league players like Hendrick and Hourihane. Totally dominated that game yesterday and in Dublin. Have we someone like kamara coming through? I donā€™t think so.

Which surprises me, should be playing at a higher level.

Molumby spells Jason with a Y. Iā€™m not convinced of his character

Why does it suprise you. He hasnā€™t really done very well at the highest level in the past - failed stints at Sevilla, Schalke and Celtic. A few good seasons in Denmark, a good season in the English Championship and a decent half season in the EPL for a 30 year old is nothing special.

We need Tony grealish

Jon Goodman would do.

Pukki aint no world beater - but he is a decent striker, that makes strikerā€™s runs, occupies strikerā€™s space and will get goals ā€¦ pointing to him scoring against weaker nations is a bit much - theyā€™re the countries he should be scoring against - The Finlandā€™s and Irelandā€™s will always struggle to score against top tier teams so you need to be killing weaker nations, which he has done. A lad with a strikerā€™s brain and ability to finish (Finnish) makes all the difference ā€¦ Maguire/Long etc are below Pukki.

Leon Best would do wreck with this Irish side.

I think Kenny needs to marry his progressive possession based approach with a bit of directness and a bit more incisiveness. In the last campaign under Mick I thought we played some really nice football in the second halves against Denmark and Switzerland when we had to chase the game, we got the ball down and looked to get out full backs pushed on and created chances but we did struggle to get going early in games when it was 0-0 or the onus was on us against the teams in the tiers below us.

We put together some nice passages of football under Kenny where we put together 10, 15, 20 passes and looked comfortable. Iā€™d like to see us build on that but with a small but more directness at times be it with a few early crosses from deep from our full backs or one of our midfielders looking to make third man runs in behind and getting hit with an early ball.

Think we are crying out for a 3-5-2 let Stevens and Doherty get down the lines. The 4-3-3 seriously clogs the wings for the full backs and our wide players are a bit shit and no creativity in midfield so nothings coming from there. Then Diddlesby is upfront on his own and never going to score

Outisde of Connolly we have the slowest set of midfielders/attackers in International football I reckon. Thereā€™d be no ball over the top kid.
