Finland v Ireland - Nations League - Wednesday, 14 Oct, 5pm

We havenā€™t got 3 good enough centre backs to play 3 at the back.

Especially with Dara Oā€™Shea yesterday doing well. Looks like he could slot in there as one of the 3 also. Canā€™t see Kenny changing though

Stevens has done very well bursting forward in the last two games ā€¦ Doherty cant get up and down for 90 mins and gets caught up the field too often. I think a 3-5-2 should certainly be tried

With a holding midfielder weā€™d manage ā€¦

What do you mean?

Alan Browne looks the best option for runs beyond Didsy

Duffy is our best centre back but he isnā€™t good enough to play in a 3. He hasnā€™t the pace for it. If you play in a 3 you have to play a high line.

He plays in a 3 for Celtic no?

In a pub league up against Hamish McJockstrap every week

Celtic dominate possession almost every game.

if you play 3 at the back against better teams, you have to play a high line or you canā€™t get out. You sacrifice options through midfield or up front, you have to push on and play high, squeeze them high. The times weā€™ve been turned over and Duffy was caught high we looked like conceding.

Also for 3 at the back youā€™d need to play 2 holding midfielders and we simply donā€™t have them

If Duffy is surrounded by 2 quick lads they maybe . I recently say the highlights of a Celtic v Hibs game and he was stretched by a lively player. He always looks a little clumsy running .

He is still a vital player for Ireland .

heā€™s our best player.

We donā€™t have speed around him is the thing. Doherty and Stevens are quick so thatā€™s why theyā€™re playing an orthodox 4 at the back, if you play 3 they are pushed on most of the time and weā€™re left we three articulated lorries at the back. Weā€™d be destroyed.

We also have zero pace in the middle of midfield. Hourihane is brutal slow.

I only saw the highlights last night but was Molumby burned for legs by Pukki ??

My biggest concern about our current formation is that Doherty is such a lazy defender. 3-5-2 might negate some of that risk.

Yeah, which would be a worry.

Hamish took him to the cleaners with anything over the top recently.

Molumby sprinted back after Pukki had led a Finnish breakaway. Pukki then did the old trick - slow him down and then immediately accelerate again - and he gave Molumby the slip. Donā€™t think he burned him for pace per se, but it looked like it as Molumby was caught out by the change of pace.

@Ashman, Nisbet was the pacy Hibee that gave Duffy some problems. Duffy had three strong games in this international break and the matches with Celtic have brought on his fitness and sharpness hugely. He was much improved on Kennyā€™s first two games. Heā€™ll get a test in the derby on Saturday from the huns. He was centre of the back three before the internationals, but was initially on the right until Jullien got injured. The two Israeli lads that could play on the right of the three now have Covid and Jullien is fit again so itā€™ll be interesting to see what back three alignment Lennon goes with (assuming he doesnā€™t change to a four). Both Duffy and Jullien appear more suited to the central role, as opposed to being dragged out to the flanks when they play on the right.

Actually @Rocko, set up the match thread.

Noted re Pukki but Jayson didnā€™t get the second kick of pace .

That Nisbet for Hibs looks useful in the bits I see this year .

He kinda bounds along like a young deer, happily playing away non-stop. Full of running but maybe lacks pure speed.

Wing back is really the perfect position for Doherty as Wolves cottoned onto. Heā€™s probably only an average full-back. As Spurs are slowly finding out.
