I urgently need an intervention (cc @neilld) as I’m really struggling with my footix responsibilities. Ordinarily I would have been all over the post split fixtures announcement in Scotland, especially with a fairly unprecedented 3-team title race. Whose sequence of matches is most advantageous? Who’s playing first on each match day? When are the derbies? When are the games between direct title rivals? What the fuck is going on with Celtic’s shambolic medical team? Johnston & Engels re-injured before their comebacks? Araujo out for the season? Can the returning Green Brigade roar the team home nonetheless?
But the truth is…I just posted the fixtures announcement screenshot without comment as I’m still absolutely distraught about the Irish play-off defeat. I haven’t been able to click back into footix mode at all, despite the title race in Scotland. Celtic’s game last Sunday largely passed me by, although I was tucking into a significant family Easter Sunday lunch in The Ferrycarrig Hotel during the game.
I’m not reading forums, I’m not listening to podcasts, I’m still dwelling on Ireland. I’m trying to fight through the grief in REAL LIFE by embracing the grassroots game. I’m coaching our U8s, I’m using the laptop at sessions to embed our pressing triggers & to drive home when exactly we need to drop into our low block. I even watched us in FAI Intermediate Cup action last Sunday week in torrential rain. It’s something to cling to but I’m sinking on THE INTERNET, which is the arena that really matters. Martin O’Neill & the Irish diaspora deserve better - I know that & I still don’t know if I want it enough.
