Anyone see some of the French media analysis of the Irish team before the first leg?
They said that Stephen Ireland was our biggest threat but that there was some doubt over whether he would play or not as he had a falling out with Trappatoni.
Do some research lads.
On the little prick, I still think Trappatoni should have picked him in a squad a while back and let him withdraw. Once that was done that would be the end of it.
Amazing to think that Trappatoni would no doubt consider Ireland for Ireland if he made himself available despite his actions yet won’t consider Andy Reid.
Ireland said himself that Trap wouldn’t pick him staight away. As Sledge has said I believe Reid will feature under Trap and possibly sooner rather than later. He fucked up, he might well have found himself recalled sooner if he was seen as a key player in our system but he’d have been murdered the other night and Trap wouldn’t have started him anyway, guitar or no guitar.
Marian is a bit of a lunatic but she’s good at her job. George is not unfortunately.
FAI definitely need to take some share of the blame for the tv fiasco. RT fucked up alright and their budgeting leaves alot to be desired when they’re spending stupid money on Confederations Cup - contractual obligations or not these events always come packaged with official commentary if you want to take it.
But the FAI were extremely greedy or extremely naive or both in their negotiations. The failure to acknowledge any sort of partnership approach is really idiotic business from them and I’d say any corporate partners considering Lansdowne at the moment will be having second thoughts about jumping into bed with an organisation that doesn’t look beyond cash, no matter where strategic interests lie.
You can just imagine Carlsberg spending a couple of million on a box to keep up their current relationship and then seeing Heineken sponsoring the jerseys in a couple of months.
No chance but to play the same way as at the weekend. Try and hold them for 70 minutes at 0-0 and pray for a set piece goal or something. Then go for it a bit more. Pity Folan isn’t available alright.
How can you say Reid would have been murdered the other night. Thats just ridiculous. Granted we have options out wide but Reid is still in far better club form that any of them. He is a far better set piece taker than any of them and has more guile than any of the four. I’d hazard a guess that Reid is quicker than Lawrence and at least similar pace to Duff also. Trapp may have been disgusted by Reid’s physical condition at the time of the guitar ‘incident’ but as stated on numerous time he still picked him for the two following squads:rolleyes: Even at his pudgy worst its doubtful Reid would have had the neglible impact that both McGeady and Hunt had when introduced. All our subs were woeful.
Id have reservations myself about a Whelan Reid axis in the midfield and I thought our midfield played well against the French. But when we went down to 1-0 there was no real point playing with two holding midfielders with both tiring badly. The game had opened up and was perfect for a player like Reid to be introduced. The only option we had was Darron Gibson who has been injured for a good while. Reid earned rave reviews playing centrally against Spurs a couple of weeks back and is the form Irish qualified player, certainly a better option than Gibson anyway. That he isnt in the squad at a minimum is diabolical.

Lar will be delighted to hear this. Well done to the shafting fuckers that are the FAI.
I can say it because it’s obvious to people who know soccer, Trap included. Reid is not as quick as any of Duff, Hunt or McGeady and he’s nowhere near as good at tracking back as any of them. He also can’t beat a player which is sadly rather essential for a winger.
Either French full back would have loved playing alongside him. It’s basically a license to go forward whenever you want.
I say all this as someone who thinks Reid has a future in this team. But he’s not a panacea for our current ills and until he improves his workrate properly he’s just a luxury that we can’t afford, largely because the luxury he offers isn’t all that special. We didn’t lose the other night because we didn’t have anyone to take set pieces. There was nothing wrong with our set pieces. Only an idiot would argue we missed Reid’s dead ball expertise.
Andrews tired alright. With a second leg to come it would have been crazy to throw someone like Andy Reid on in the middle of the park. It’s a pity we didn’t have a direct replacement for Andrews when he was struggling but Reid wasn’t the answer and won’t be.
I appreciate the fact you have a deluded love for the man but he’s not the form Irish qualified player - he’s a limited player playing ok for a shit team. That’s all he is. More importantly, he does’t suit the system and in international football where you don’t get the chance to redeem lapses (unlike league football) then he’ll always carry less weight (unusual for him).
