France Versus Ireland Second Leg

Same team for Wednesday by the looks of it.

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni is unlikely to make any changes for Wednesday’s World Cup play-off second leg against France in Paris.

Trapattoni’s side have a mountain to climb after Saturday’s 1-0 first-leg defeat at Croke Park but the Irish boss insists his team can still qualify.

“All the players played well. I don’t have in my mind to change anything,” said Trapattoni.

“We can score on Wednesday. If we play offensively, we can score a goal.”

Trapattoni left it until the last minute before plumping for Liam Lawrence on the right side of midfield and the Republic boss was delighted with the Stoke player’s contribution.

“The performance of (Damien) Duff and Lawrence was super,” he said.

The two sets of players clashed in the centre circle at the final whistle and Trapattoni insisted that the flare-up was the result of an unrepeatable insult.

“One player said something to one of my players which I cannot repeat (it was so bad),” added Trapattoni.

“A famous player insulted the player. I name the sin but not the player. You cannot insult the Irish people like this,” he said
“It is not in my culture (to complain). It is enough that they think about what they said and they realise they have done wrong,” he added.

Trapattoni said his players were disappointed but urged them to play with the same attitude and put more pressure on their more illustrious opponents on Wednesday.

“It is 50/50. It is only halfway. Anything can happen. I have seen in my time in Italy, in my time here with Ireland, many surprise results,” he said.

“Start with a little deflection, 1-0 to us. Why not?”

The team is clearly not set up to play a fluid, attacking style so I’d expect Trap to adopt similar tactics on Wednesday as he did last night. He’s spent 18 months embedding this disciplined system and structure and there’s not a chance he’ll go gung ho from the start. I can see France having most of the ball and Ireland trying to contain them and keeping things tight. Set pieces will again probably provide the best opportunity of a goal, I’d imagine.

Disappointing result but good buzz in Croker last night all the same. As always when France are in town, bashing out Le Marseillais was the highlight of the evening. Had them rattled going in at half time and thought a goal for us at that stage would completely dismantle the arrogant pricks but they picked it up considerably in 2nd half and though their goal was lucky you felt it was coming all the same. Anelka I felt was the best player on the pitch by a fair distance. Dont hold any grudge to the Irish team though, their clearly limited and can only give it their all, which they did last night.
Regarding the 2nd leg they dont have a prayer.

I’m alarmed if Leon Best is the guy who’s going to be brought on again when we need a goal. I thought he was utter shite last night and I don’t remember him ever being much better at that role in other games.

Could the breakdown be a crucial area bandage?

I would agree with that.

Best was utter shite last night and looked completely out of his depth.

Andy Reid,Stephen Reid,Clinton Morrison,Lee Carsley
4 players who would bring more of an edge to this team.
Chances of any of them playing on Wednesday, Zero
Trap out!!

As I commented in Croker last night Best’s introduction highlighted what a loss Folan actually is. At the same time at nil all it still meant we needed to score over there which hasn’t changed at 0-1.

Whatever about the other three Carsley is utter shite and cannot play in a two man centre midfield…

As opposed to Andrews/Whelan? Carsley is limited alright but wouldn’t be afraid to get stuck in and mix it with these French poofs. If we are to have any hope at all its to unsettle the French, go in hard. The boys last night were content to give them the freedom of Croke Park.

I thought Whelan did well last night. Andrews faded quite a good bit in the second half after a solid first half.

He’d be the better of the two alright, capable of scoring the odd screamer as well. Can’t fault them for effort or commitement either, just think we have better options in that area, some of whom cant even make the squad.

Folan is utter shite though as well.

Morrison is much better than both of them.

I was impressed with Whelan last night as well.

In fairness to Folan he has done well when he’s played, particularly away to Italy. He would have been a better bet than Best or Morrison last night, if only for his awkwardness.

I thought Folan made quite a difference in Bari and is a definite loss. Morrison deserves to be in ahead of Best who is a hopeless player. I’d have Gary Doherty ahead of Best.

Abidal is out of the second leg…

Abidal will be more of a loss for us than them I feel. I’d also agree that Best looked out of his depth but so would a lot of players against that French side, who for me are a superior outfit to Italy.

Well that was A result that really hurt,we definitely deserved A draw last night but that’s neither here nor there now,we have A nigh on impossible task at hand but I still have hope we can turn the second leg into A crazy one(A 2-1 win or something)very unlikely but still. That dirty fucking prick Diarra has stirred the hornets now I feel and maybe his shit talk may well drive our lads above their limits!either way the support last night was fantastic and well done to all who attended. We have one more battle before we could go out,:guns: lets make it an epic one.
